.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I am very interested in Japanese written language and culture. - I really have an interest in knowing more about what happened in the Holocaust and this was the perfect class to take. - I like Marine Science and wanted an opportunity to learn more about animals and experience the DL class. - I wanted to take SUPA Calculus and the only SUPA Calculus class available was the distance learning calculus. The course was an honors course and I like to challenge myself a bit. I honestly didn’t realize it was distance learning until the first day of school. - I wanted to take APUSH and Distance Learning is the only way. I took this because I needed a science class and I have taken other classes in the DL and liked it better than normal classes. - I needed to take Calculus and it was the only Calculus class offered at my high school. It was the only way I could take AP United States History. Also, I wanted to try the Distance Learning program. - It is the only way to take French at this level in our school. I wanted a new experience and this was the only way I could take a Chinese class. - I have taken DL courses before, even with teachers from other host sites and I found it beneficial and a good way to meet new people that you don’t see everyday. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject or instructor. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They were interested in meeting new students. They needed that course. They wanted to try something new or different. They wanted a challenge, AP or college credit.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Communicating with others that do not go to our school and meeting new people. - The interaction between us and St. Johnsville has allowed us to become good friends. Also, we were given an amazing opportunity to visit a holocaust survivor. - It was just as beneficial as a normal classroom setting, and you interacted with other schools. - I loved the course and the learning environment being with a smaller group of kids made it more fun to learn because we could discuss the topics and express our opinions more. I like that we weren't treated like high school students, we were treated like adults and lots of work was online. - It was creative and unique and the teacher paid attention to both sets of students. It gave me the opportunity to take a different class than what my school could offer. - It was a new experience for me, because my instructor was on a screen which I found to be quite interesting. I liked that I had a good teacher out of the building. - I learned a lot from Mr. Swain things that I probably would not in my own school. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. The interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to try something different. The subject or course material. The opportunity to work and learn with technology. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ When the system went down or we didn’t have sound. - The static noise from cell phones. - That sometimes we had communication problems between the 2 sites, so that day it couldn’t connect. - Sometimes the TVs, speakers, or microphones would act up and we wouldn’t be able to really have class until the issue was fixed. The main screen where the problems are written is a little small. Had some trouble reading but I had adjusted to it. - I didn’t like that we couldn’t do more hands on or field trips like the other main class. - That everyone can hear you all the time. The teacher would end up ignoring us accidently, forgetting we were there for his class. - Sometimes it felt like we weren't getting enough attention. - I wasn’t fond of my teacher. She favored the students at her school. She never called me the right name. - At first it was difficult since I didn’t have my teacher in the room to ask questions in person, but later on I found that email worked just as good. Certain students caused many problems. Examples: doing makeup, eating in class, yelling at the teacher, brushing hair, having cellphones out, talking bad about other students. - I did not like the fact that our connecting class was rude and very disrespectful towards the students and the teacher. We had to stop on many accounts to try and fix the problems that should have never been allowed to happen. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: The teacher’s lack of organization or ineffective use of the equipment. Not providing enough opportunity for extra help or making up a class. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. * The second most common response to this question was an indication that the student had nothing that they disliked. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Section C Depending on the room, better microphones. - I would suggest better equipment, that way you wouldn’t have it freezing or having the speakers so sensitive. - Getting rid of the TV's and fixing/ replacing the computers. - New technology (Computers, TV's) Communicating with the other class more often. - I would suggest a time to get to know the instructor. - Have the teacher visit the different sites more than once so that we could do more hands on labs. I would suggest (for this class particularly) to become more interactive with the students on the other side. - Easier access to contact the teacher and send work over. - Set up more time for study or help. Maybe a training day for equipment use. More student/teacher interaction. A way for both students (host and remote) to interact. I felt like she had plenty of missed opportunity with the equipment. - That the teacher not favor her students more than the ones on other sites. That the teacher treat other students and teacher aide better. Get better seats and equipment. - Larger screens.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently suggested changes: More balanced attention to classes by the teacher and better interaction. Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Updated environment chairs desks air conditioning etc. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. Teachers should use the system more effectively and be better organized. Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences. * The most common response to this question was an indication that the student had no changes to suggest. Better discipline, particularly re: loud talking, tapping and class disruptions.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ How fun the course was and how comfortable I was seeing myself on camera after I got over the initial shock. - How much I enjoyed the class. I also loved having Mrs. Bruce as a teacher. I thought that I would hate being on the TV but I'm starting to get comfortable on the screen. - How the classroom is like any other classroom at your school. - I was surprised at how easy it was to learn the information. I thought it would be a lot different than a normal classroom setting but it was quite similar. – It was as easy to learn while he wasn’t in the classroom as it was if he were to be here everyday. How easy it was to interact with the remote locations and how the teaching wasn’t so different. - I was surprised about how small the other classes were and how easy it was to still learn and take notes even with other schools. - The teacher is very nice and tried to help as much as possible. The virtual field trips. I didn’t know that was possible. It was fun. - The fact that technology has advanced so much that something like this class is commonplace nowadays. - The "virtual field trip" to the Mote Marine Lab / Aquarium. That was cool. - Quality of video was surprisingly good. That I've learned more interacting with the students in other schools and teacher, than I've ever learned in an actual classroom setting. Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. Student Comments Most Frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy. An appreciation for the advanced technology. Section C How much we were able to learn over the system. * The second most common response to this question was an indication that there was nothing surprising about distance learning.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ______________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ The teacher could have given us contact information in case we had individual questions. I wish she treated us with same respect she gave to her class. She ignored us, so maybe it would have been nice if she recognized we were there and didn’t blame us for problems such as not having school when she did. I wish she had paid attention, learned our names, treated us fairly, didn’t favor her class, let us make up work. I wish he enforced the rule prohibiting cell phones because we couldn’t hear through the interference a lot of times. I wish she had told the other class to be quiet more often. I felt like she forgot the other students at times and when she would interact with us the other students were left out. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Make a greater effort to include receive site students in discussions, Pay equal attention to them and get to know them. Be more organized and prepared. Visit remote sites at least once and offer some extra help. Receive site students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ When there was a delay in the connecting school our teacher changed the test date so we all had an extra day to study and ask more questions. – Our teacher was fair with every student when grading and used Blackboard, which was a great tool for communication. - The teacher maintained email contact and we could Skype with her. She offered to commute to Saratoga for review sessions. – The teacher worked around the technology issues in the classroom. Occasional technical errors resulted in calling the other school and getting it solved. If we needed to ever contact him, we could email him and he'd respond in a timely fashion. - He set up the ability to group video chat through other devices when necessary. He also responded to he emails extremely quickly. At first, it took a while to exchange our paper work because we were mailing but then she switched to fax and made it so there was less papers. She always fixed the issue if there was something wrong. - Always called to fix problems with the system as soon as possible. He tried very hard to keep each student engaged with the class and got to know us all. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most frequently recognized DL teacher efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate Provided extra help and review sessions. Helped to quickly resolve technical problems. Promoted interaction and participation. Used BlackBoard, made e-mail or phone contact available. Visited receive sites and got to know the students.
