3 Topics in Reading: Goals for the Year based on Pennsylvania State Standards: 1.2 Reading Informational Text Students read, understand, and respond to informational text—with an emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and making connections among ideas and between texts with focus on textual evidence 1.3 Reading Literature Students read and respond to works of literature—with an emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and making connections among ideas and between texts with a focus on textual evidence. 1.5 Speaking and Listening Students present appropriately in formal speaking situations, listen critically, and respond intelligently as individuals or in group discussions.

9 Reading Logs Yellow journal Read PCR novel for 20 minutes 5 nights a week Complete a reading log after reading 1. Title of Book 2. Number of pages read 3. Brief summary of what they read 4. Thoughts/reactions 5. Reading goal we are working on 1. (predicting, making connections, visualizations) Five reading logs due every Friday, work will be accepted one day late for full credit. Logs turned in after that time will be considered late and graded for partial credit.

12 According to Kelly Gallagher… More books = more reading = better reading You can’t become a reader without good books. Having students track their reading on both a daily and a yearly basis serves as a reminder that they are progressing as readers. “No one rises to low expectations.” Having students chart their reading progress enables them to recognize their advancement as readers. If one improves reading by reading, then it follows that time must be set aside during the school day to ensure that reading takes place.
