2 Roy Lichtenstein Roy Lichtenstein was a very important and famous American painter and sculptor whose 1950’s abstract style developed into to Pop art in the early 1960’s.

5 Ben Day Dots The patterns that Lichtenstein used are similar to Pointillism and mimic a process used for printing pictures in comics known as Benday dots The Benday dots printing process was invented by the illustrator and printer Benjamin Day 1810 –1889.

9 Whaam! 1963 Whaam! was painted in It is acrylic on canvas and measures 1.73 by 4.06 m (5 ft 7 in by 13 ft 4 in). This painting is part of the collection at the Tate Gallery in London.

13 Changes in style In later life Lichtenstein became more interested in deconstruction and abstraction. Looking at the two pictures on the following slides notice how Lichtenstein’s style changed and developed in his later life.

He was inducted into the army in 1943. In 1946 he received a Honorable discharge from the army after his father passes away. 1949 He gets married to Isable Wilson.

18 More about his legacy In 1967 he married his second wife Dorothe Herzka. “In 1996 the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC became the largest single repository of the artist's work when he donated 154 prints and 2 books. In total there are some 4,500 works thought to be in circulation.[2]” Sept. 29. Roy Lichtenstein in New York from pneumonia. He was only 74. He left behind a world of art and his second wife and 2 sons.
