3 Guidelines for PQP Attempt to use poetic language/terms when you praise or polish a poem. Think of the images created in your mind (imagery/descriptive language), figurative language or comparisons (metaphor/simile), structural components (stanzas, rhyme scheme, organization of poem), and connections to self, other texts or real-world.

4 Guidelines for Questioning Ask about word meanings Question the meanings of metaphors and similes Ask a question about the poet Question the author’s purpose or tone Question the use of words, phrases, descriptions Question the connection of the title to the poem

5 DoDon’t Use poetic terms… Figurative language… Descriptive language… Sensory language… Personal connections or stories…. TO DESCRIBE! Say, “I don’t know,” “nothing,” or “everything” to describe your feelings about a poem Use the same response for every poem Disengage! You will have assignments that accompany the poems Comment on the title each time
