1. Bell Work What were the Townshend Acts? The Intolerable Acts? This Day in History: October 14, 1918- Adolf Hitler is wounded by a gas attack in Belgium. October 14, 1944- Erwin Rommel commits suicide rather than face a public trial for his participation in Operation Valkyrie. October 14, 1947- Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. October 14, 1962- The Cuban Missile Crisis begins. October 14, 1964- Martin Luther King Jr. wins the Nobel Peace prize.

2. The Revolution

3. First Continental Congress In 1774 the First Continental Congress meets in Philadelphia. Drafted the Declaration of Rights. The goal was to state the colonists’ concerns and ask the king to correct the problems.

4. British Advance Toward Concord Paul Revere rode out to warn colonists that the British were advancing toward Concord. Other riders traveled around New England including Israel Bissell who was another rider that covered far more territory than Revere.

6. Shot Heard Round the World The first shots fired of the Revolution took place in Lexington, Massachusetts. From Lexington the British advanced toward Concord where they were swarmed by local colonists.

7. Second Continental Congress Colonies drafted new state constitutions. Continental Army was formed with George Washington in charge. Olive Branch Petition sent to King George

8. Bell Work What was the importance of Common Sense? This Day in History: October 23, 42 B.C.: Brutus, the leading conspirator of the assassination of Julius Caesar commits suicide after his defeat at the second battle of Philippi. October 23, 1855- An anti-slavery group sets up a Free State government in opposition to the fraudulently elected pro-slavery legislature in Kansas in the midst of “Bleeding Kansas.” October 23, 1921- The unknown soldier is selected to be honored among the American servicemen who gave their lives during World War I. October 23, 1925- Johnny Carson is born in Corning, Iowa. October 23, 1942- Michael Crichton is born in Chicago, Illinois.

9. Early Action In May 1775 Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen capture Fort Ticonderoga from the British. June 1775 the British attack the colonist’s at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The British won the battle, but they suffered many casualties.

13. The Siege of Boston Henry Knox transported heavy guns over 300 miles from Ticonderoga to Boston. On March 4, 1776 Washington’s Army fortified Dorchester Heights overnight. This forced William Howe’s army to leave Boston.

14. Common Sense Written by Thomas Paine and published in January of 1776. Increased support for independence. Read the Common Sense handout.

15. Declaration of Independence In June of 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia proposed that the states should be independent of Britain. While delegates debated a committee including Ben Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson drafted a document. Delegates voted for independence on July 2 nd and the document was adopted on July 4 th.

17. Read the Document on Pages 137- 140 What is the main point of the Preamble? What statements in the Declaration of Independence are important values in a democracy? What are the grievances that the colonists have against the king? What powers did the new and free independent states plan to claim?
