What is ENUM? IETF Standard, RFC2916. Method to use Domain Name System (“DNS”) to map E164 numbers to Uniform Resource Locators (“URL’s”). In English, a registry database/s where a server can identify Naming Authority Pointer Records (“NAPTR”) which can find end points being requested by the calling/requesting party. An example from today would be a call to directory service for a listing, which then connects you to whom you are calling. One method for convergence of the PSTN and the IP data networks.

ENUM Goals Resolve telephone numbers to URL’s Scalable and comparable to PSTN quality Able to insert information in case of queries Secure updates and changes Address local number portability in ENUM

ENUM Goals Not Protocol specific, or only for a specific service (mobile) Intelligent responses to queries are not part of the standard Eventual uses of ENUM not known and dependent of future standards work (one number per subscriber, etc.).

Administrative Issues (Concerns) Changes in End User Information - Cancellation of service - Changes of Service Providers - Change by customer of telephone number Changes in Service Provider Information - Changes of in Registrars - Service Provider A and Service Provider B do not have a bi-lateral agreement, who handles $. All E-164 numbering plans are not created equal

How ENUM Type Service Works Today!

The Constraining PSTN Today, service providers maintain two distinct and separate networks; one for delivering data traffic and another for voice traffic. Each network requires its own equipment, circuits and customer care systems. However, the declining economy and lack of capital investments budgets are causing carriers to look at core transport models and a single point of access for data, voice and other new communication mediums. Carriers are seeking to: - operate one network; - consolidate voice and data traffic; - deliver new services to their customers quickly and efficiently, and; - move the higher margin voice traffic onto the existing, lower cost IP networks

What will the NGN Really BE? Open architecture design running on UNIX (Server type box). Remote maintenance and diagnostic capabilities with server farm redundancy. Remote centralized management will be key to success. New features added in layers by software, not additional and complex hardware. Reduces network complexity and people required to maintain. Open API’s for new service creation and customer care/ provisioning. Scalable using the server farm or other reliability model. New subscribers in real time. Supports legacy equipment for next 15 years. Built for secure interconnect, not one giant network!
