2 LOYAL CREEK FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL
Opothleyahola Muscugee Creek Nation Loyal Creek – 6500 Native Americans from several different tribes Treaty with South wanted to remain loyal to the North. Refered to President Lincoln as the “Great Father”

3 PATH OF THE LOYAL CREEK TO KANSAS
CONFEDERATE COLONEL COOPER CAMPED AT DEEP FORK AND NOTH FORK OF THE CANADIAN RIVER NOVEMBER 19, 1861 – ROUND MOUNTAIN DECEMBER 9, 1861 – CHUSTO TALASAH OR CAVING BANKS ON BIRD CREEK DECEMBER 26, 1861 – CHUSTENAHLAH (WEST OF SKIATOOK) FLED TO KANSAS AND WERE REFUGES. MANY LOST FEET AND HANDS FROM FROST BITE.

10,000 UNION SOLDIERS AND 16,000 CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS NORTH WAS LED BY – BRIGADIER GENERAL SAMUEL CURTIS SOUTH WAS LED BY – MAJOR GENERAL EARL VAN DORN 4600 CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS WERE KILLED 800 CHEROKEE FOUGHT FOR THE SOUTH THIS LOSS WEAKENED THE SOUTHS POSITON IN THE WEST

5 INDIAN EXPEDITION Union Leaders in Kansas put together an summoned troops from Northern States. Union General James Blunt and Colonel William Weer Stand Watie’s Cavalry – Confederate Union took over Fort Gibson and Tahlequah John Ross – protective custody Battle in Northwest Arkansas Confederates retreated to Fort Wayne in Indian Territory. Blunt drove them out were they left cannon, supplies and fifty prisoners

6 BATTLE AT CABIN CREEK Union troops made up of Native Americans, Black and Whites Lead by Colonel James M. Williams – to bring supplies and food Native American in Indian Territory that still lived there. On there way Stand Waties raided the supply train. Union won after a bloody battle and the supply train made in safely to Fort Gibson

8 THE BATTLE AT HONEY SPRINGS
UNION HAD WON GETTYSBURG AND VICKSBURG Confederates planned to combine forces to take over Fort Gibson. Blunt attacked early on July Indian and Black Infantries helped win this battle This was the Major Battle fought on Indian Territory
