5 Why Do We Have RIGHTS? 1) Security – Protect from harmful behavior. 2) Equality – People should have equal opportunity regardless of race, gender, or religious background. 3) Liberty – All people should have certain basic freedoms. (Bill of Rights)

10 BY NATURALIZATION The legal process of becoming a citizen of the United States. 1. Live in US 5 years – Married 3 years 2. File Declaration of Intent Form (USCIS) 3. Meet with USCIS 4. Take Exam 5. Take Oath of Allegiance

11 IMMIGRATION Immigrant – People who move permanently to a new country. Immigrant – People who move permanently to a new country. Why do People Come to the U.S 1. For work 2. Better life 3. School 4. “Land of Opportunity” 5. Visit Relatives 6. Escape some sort of persecution (Refugees)

Alien: known by govt Illegal Alien: unknown by govt Resident- person from a foreign country who is a permanent residence in the U.S a.May stay as long as they want without becoming citizens Non-Resident- expects to stay in the U.S for a short period Ex: Turkish journalist who has come to report on a presidential election  Cannot run for office, vote, serve on juries or work in most govt jobs  Must Carry ID (Green Card) About 12 million in the U.S Reasons: refused permission to immigrate never applied for permission b/c they fear a long slow process never applied for permission b/c they fear being turned down They come in a variety of ways: a.Temporary visitors (never leave) b.Crossing the boarders illegally  Both Canada & Mexico c. Foreigners who have stayed after their legal permit expires
