7 EI Funded Projects Overview: €2,000,000 won in competitive call under Enterprise Ireland’s Industry-Led Research Program. Project called elite (eLearning Irish Technologies) Aim: to inject advanced ICT research into the Irish eLearning cluster of companies. With this acquisition of knowledge help them compete better in a very competitive global marketplace. Offer them significant competitive and cost advantage in terms of product and service development and delivery, eLearning content creation and consumption, and integration with their client enterprise applications and operations. Duration: Jan 06 to Dec 08 Team: Led by Bill McDaniel as Project Executive with Stefan Decker as Scientific Lead and Liam Ó Móráín as Account Manager Deliverables: Actual code these companies can use. Research Focus: C&C, S&R, I&I Opportunity: Get DERI technology into the marketplace through these companies in a reasonable timeframe. Significant additional funding opportunities from Enterprise Ireland under their Innovation Partnership for specific eLearning research Provides a platform on which to develop significant expertise in eLearning and affords the opportunity to gain additional research funding through EU etc. Possible start-up opportunities for team members Challenge: Manage the expectations of all the project constituents in terms of what can and can’t be developed and delivered. Manage the somewhat contrary views between researchers’ timelines and those of product companies. Advance fundamental research in the area of eLearning while also delivering near-to-market solutions. elite

8 EI Funded Projects Overview: €340,000 won under Enterprise Ireland’s Commercialization Fund. SAOR is Semantically Annotated Oncology & Radiology Aim: to use semantics to integrated disparate clinical systems in the oncology and radiology units of the UCH Galway Duration: Nov 05 to Oct 08 Focus: Healthcare Research focus: C&C, S&R, I&I Team: Led by Tomas Vitvar as PI and Liam Ó Móráin as Account Manager Deliverables: Working prototype. License and/or start-up Opportunity: Offer a beach head in healthcare. Compliments RIDE. Challenge: Manage the expectations of all the project constituents in terms of what can and can’t be developed and delivered in the timeframe and the resources available.

Aim: to investigate using semantics with MathML and extend the product feature and market attractiveness of Exam Ready Duration: 4 months Focus: eLearning Research focus: C&C, S&R, I&I Team: Led by Bill McDaniel as PI and Liam Ó Móráin as Account Manager Deliverables: Decision to go for full proposal under Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Partnership Opportunity: Extends DERI’s capabilities in eLearning Challenge: Market readiness
