How do people catch colds and flu? Beside each pathogen listed on the board, list the common diseases that they can cause. Viruses Bacteria Fungi Protozoa

Viruses – the smallest and simplest pathogens. Ex. colds, chicken pox, influenza, measles, mononucleosis, mumps, hepatitis, herpes, HPV, HIV, yellow fever, polio, rabies and pneumonia. Bacteria – simple one celled organisms. Ex. Pinkeye, whooping cough, strep throat, tuberculosis, Lyme disease, most food borne illnesses, diphtheria, bacterial pneumonia, cholera, gonorrhea. Fungi – more complex than bacteria but can’t make their own food. Ex. Athlete’s foot and ringworm Protozoa – One celled organisms that are more complex than bacteria. Ex. Dysentery, malaria, and trichmoniasis

Disease – any condition that interferes with the normal functioning of the body or mind. Communicable disease – disease that can be spread to a person from another person, animal or object. Communicable diseases are caused by germs. Germs are organisms that are so small they can only be seen through a microscope. Germs that cause disease are called pathogens. Infection is a condition when pathogens enter the body, multiply and cause harm.
