11. What are the purposes of satellites? After World War II the Soviet Union occupied much of Eastern Europe. Stalin promised to hold free elections “as soon as possible” but that never happened. Communists controlled the governments of Eastern Europe using them as Satellite Nations. The Soviets backed harsh dictators, citizens were imprisoned, Winston Churchill called this an “iron curtain” as it shut out Eastern Europe from the democratic West.
