Welcome to Pine Class!

This will be my 3 rd year at Cuxton. I have been in many other schools in Medway and some in Gravesend. I have covered both Key stage 1 and Key stage 2 during these experiences with some experience in Foundation Stage. Bit of a Disney fan! Get to Know Me

This is what a typical day in our classroom looks like.

End of year expectations. English – Children by the end should be able to write 6 or more extended sentences using capital letters, adjectives, phonics to spell and correct punctuation across the range of texts (narrative, non-fiction, poetry etc.) They will also be able to write a short and structured story which they have planned and edited. Maths – Children already should be able to count confidently up to 20. In year 1 children will be counting up and backwards in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s to 100 and beyond. They will be able to use addition and subtraction using resources, number lines and mental calculations. Know 2D and 3D shape names and their properties. Tell the time to o'clock, quarter past and half past in both digital and analogue. Phonics – In June, Children will be tested on their phonic application to real and nonsense words. For the past 3 years the pass mark has been 32/40. Children will be expected to read the words out of context, segmenting and blending the sounds together.

Behaviour and expectations In class and on the playground we use the ‘Behaviour Ladder’. Movement lower down the ladder will be discussed with you if at all I feel concerned. Children can earn squirrels for outstanding behaviour or for showing one of our school values. We work as a class to earn 100 squirrels and when we reach the goal we get a treat such as biscuits, extended play, additional choosing etc. We keep going to see which class can earn the most squirrels!

Homework and Spellings Children have homework already in the front of their book. Please support and adapt the work where needed. Homework is expected to be completed. Due on Friday mornings. If books are handed in before, we will take them out and keep them to return on Friday. Need extra time? Place a note in the book. Spellings are sent home every week. PLEASE do not use the spelling books to practice in. Books need to be in bags every Friday for testing and will be sent home with new/updated spellings to practice. READ, READ, READ!!!

Number bonds are number pairs that make a given total, such as 3+2=5. We will be testing the children on their quick rapid recall of number bonds weekly on a Friday starting in a couple of weeks. We are spending a whole week practicing the skills needed for the number bond tests. Children will have an allotted time to answer as many questions as they can. Once children are confident and have completed the sheet, they move onto next set of number bonds (pairs). Children can use resources to support this or they can use mental calculations. Number bonds

PE Our PE days are Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Children to wear PE clothes outlined in the uniform policy. CLEARLY LABELLED PLEASE! Children to dress and undress themselves (we will help with stuck jumpers on the head and shoes on the wrong feet ). Earrings need to be removed before PE sessions either by yourselves or if the children can do it themselves, this is great. We cannot take them out for the children.

Assessment Children will be assessed end of year expectations outlined in the National Curriculum. Using the National Curriculum, statements have been created for each year group. All of the statements have to be met so that a child can be considered as ‘secure’ in that subject. There are 6 steps per year group. B (beginning), B+ (beginning +), W (within), W+ (within +), S (secure) and S+ (secure +). For a child to achieve an S+ at the end of the year all the objectives need to have been met and they must demonstrate and apply independently.

Money, letters and concerns. Any money to be placed in a clearly marked and secure envelope. Absent notes to be in the next day which will be sent to the office. Any concerns, please do write a note either with your concern which I can address during the day or arrange an appointment to meet after school if you wish to speak in person.

End of the day. Sorry about the first day! – We will get the children ready and line them up to come out onto the playground. Children need to remain in the line until myself, Mrs. Hutcheon or Mrs. Donald can see an adult who is collecting them that we know of. If someone new is collecting your child please leave a note in the book bag or let the office know, who can pass on the message. We will not let a child go home with someone we haven’t been told about, we will ask the office to make a phone call to confirm the adult picking up.

Questions? Let’s Have a Great Year!
