2 Chapter 1: What is Psychology? The Big Idea: – Originating in ancient times, psychology is a science consisting of many different fields that study human behavior and mental processes. Essential Question: – What are current perspectives in Psychology? Objective: – Evaluate current perspectives in psychology.

4 The Role of the Mind What is the humanistic perspective? Do you agree with the behaviorists’ criticisms of humanistic psychology? What is the psychoanalytic perspective? How might Sigmund Freud interpret the outbreak of a riot at a soccer game?

6 The Role of Experience What is the learning perspective? Why might a student become confused when studying psychological perspectives about how learning influences behavior? What is the sociocultral perspective? What does social-learning theory suggest about environments? Do you agree with the behaviorist position about consciousness?

7 The Biopsychosocial Perspective Who developed the model for the biopsychosocial perspective? How might the biopsychosocial perspective be summarized?

8 Section 4: Contemporary Psychological Perspectives Why do you think there are so many different perspectives in contemporary psychology? Do you think it is important for a psychological researcher to be well-informed about research that represents perspectives other than his or her own? Does all psychological research have to be based on one single perspective?
