1 The effects of temperature on chemiluminescence in fireflies.

2 Independent and dependent variables Independent variable: Change of temperature. 15°C, 25°C, 35°C Dependent variable: Brightness of glow from fireflies measured in lumens. Hypothesis: The warmer the temperature the more lumens of light in firefly chemiluminescence.

3 The experiment 1. Capture 30 fireflies and place them in a container that is painted black. 2. Leave a clear glass covered opening. 3. This is where the light meter will record the amount of lumens. 4. Place a thermometer through the top of the container. 5. Place the box in a 10°C atmosphere and record the amount of light emitted every 15 seconds for 5 minutes. 6. Record the average. 7. Repeat at other degrees.

5 Conclusion Warmer temperatures registered higher lumens than lower temperatures on average. Warmer temperatures registered higher lumens than lower temperatures on average. Industry using chemiluminescence may want to adjust temperatures to reach an optimal temperature for amount of light (lumens) like in the use of blood detection in forensics.
