2 QW: C HARACTER A WARD (R EADING R ESPONSE ) First, read your choice book for 15 minutes. Then, complete your quick write in your composition notebook. You are going to give one character in your book an award for one of their traits. What would the award be and why?

3 O BJECTIVE, A GENDA, AND H OMEWORK Objective: Students will organize their research into a strategic, detailed outline for their persuasive speeches. Agenda: Independent Reading and Quick Write Review Scale for Outline Write Outlines—DUE FRIDAY Homework: Turn in revised Anthem papers by Friday 2/28. Read your choice book and study the Greek roots.

4 W HAT ’ S TO C OME Fri 2/28: Finish writing outlines for 20 minutes and turn them in Mon 3/3: Revise topic proposal letters to complete final draft Fri 3/7: Finish and revise annotated bibliographies to complete final draft in lab Mon 3/10: Revise outlines for final draft Tues 3/11-Fri 3/14: Create note card and practice speeches in class Mon 3/17-Fri 3/21: Speech Week

5 O UTLINE S CALE : 3.0 (C) Demonstrates evidence of Introduction, 3 body sections, and conclusion Recognizes the opposition Introduces contextual information/ thesis is evident. Appeals to credibility (ethos), logic (logos), and emotion (pathos) and include 2 pieces of evidence/ 2 examples for each that is subordinate and supports the main idea. Concludes ideas by restating the thesis and call the audience to action. Follows outline format: parallel structure information is coordinated subordinate details support each heading each heading must include 2 or more parts Writes with few errors/has polished format.

6 O UTLINE S CALE 4.0 (B) Shows one of the following: More than 2 examples/evidence for each section OR a more perceptive/thoughtful, in-depth analysis of the examples/evidence Logically orders outline with strongest argument last to show strategy Write with no errors and uses varied language to show persuasive rhetoric. 5.0 (A) Includes more than 2 examples/evidence for each section AND a more perceptive/thoughtful, in-depth analysis of those examples/evidence Logically orders outline with strongest argument last and threads arguments together with common ideas/transitions Writes with no errors and uses varied and sophisticated language to show persuasive rhetoric

7 W RITE Y OUR O UTLINE You have the rest of the period today and about half the period tomorrow to complete a rough draft of your outline. Refer to the following to help you: The scale The banning books teacher example The bottled water student example If you need to, you may change the structure of the outline template by adding things on the back of each page. You may also do it on your own paper, but you need to make sure it still includes all the necessary information.
