1. WELCOME TO MS. HERRING’S AMERICAN HISTORY CLASS 1

2. YOUR TEACHER: MRS. HERRING Was an exchange student in High School to Australia. Went to University of Florida and earned a dual degree in Russian and Political Science. Spent a summer in Moscow, Russia studying Russian Language at Moscow State University. My prior career was working as a Court Coordinator for the State Attorney’s Office. I also worked as a Paralegal in the Attorney General’s Child Support Enforcement Division. I have a Master’s Degree in Political Science. 2

3. The United States is seen by its citizens as an exceptional country. In order to understand how we came to be and where we are going, we must acknowledge our unique and fascinating (and relatively short) history. This class will survey the history of America from the Civil War to the present times. Some of the main events that will be explored will be: The Civil War Reconstruction Westward Expansion The Industrial Revolution The Progressive Era World War I The Roaring 20s The Great Depression The New Deal World War II The Cold War and much, much more! 3 Course Description

4. STUDENT FOLDERS Make sure that you have the following items in your folder: student inventory sheet, parental contact sheet, and grade log sheet. Write the following on the tab of the folder: last name, first name student ID # class period American Govt. Herring 4

5. CLASS RULES 1. Be in your assigned seat ready to work when the bell rings. -> if you are not in your seat, you are late… if you are late 3 times you will get an after-school detention. 2. Come to class prepared with all books, materials and WEARING UNIFORM -> if you are unprepared, you will have points deducted from your participation grade. IF YOU ARE NOT WEARING YOUR UNIFORM YOU WILL GET AN AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION- as per Dr. Cabrera. 3. Keep cell phones and other electronic devices OFF and out of sight. -> if I see or hear your device, I will confiscate it immediately. 4. Do not swear in class. -> you or your group will receive an F for your daily participation grade. 5. Treat one another with the utmost respect. -> if you are disrespectful you will be sent to CSI immediately. 6. Always be honest, remember -no one trusts a liar or cheater. -> if you cheat, both parties will get a zero and a phone call home. 5

6. Class passes You will receive 3 passes per 9 week grading period. Your pass may be used to go to the restroom, drink water, visit locker etc… You must produce the pass to teacher, cannot claim you left it elsewhere. You can redeem your unused passes at the end of the grading period for extra credit. You may only use the pass assigned to you. No additional outings will be allowed, so use your passes wisely and come to class prepared. No one will be permitted to leave class during the first or last 15 minutes of class. 6

7. Daily Procedures (please copy) All home work assignments will be collected before class begins (no late assignments without valid excuse) If home work or class work not completed, an acknowledgement of failure to do work sheet must be signed with reason for not completing assignment to place in student folder. Failure to fill out form will result in the failing grade to be doubled. Begin “Do Now” assignment as soon as the bell rings. Copy “Week at a Glance” plan on Mondays/Tuesdays. Copy any daily class or home learning assignment into your notebook. Get ready for Lecture/Notes and Discussion. Students must sign out/in on the ‘sign out sheet’ if you leave the classroom for any reason or come in to class late with pass. Class is dismissed by the teacher- DO NOT get out of your seat prior to bell.

8. Procedures continued… Students may NOT leave class if there is any garbage left on the desks or floor. If a student is absent, s/he must obtain the work and make up missed items within a week of day out- and MUST FILL OUT AND ATTACH A MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENT FORM. Late assignments will not be accepted- even if you are my favorite student so don’t ask! If you are absent for a group project, you will have to do an independent presentation upon return. If you are absent the day of a test, you must make it upon day of return- makeup tests may be more difficult. You will receive participation grades which will consist of : 1) coming to class prepared 2) wearing complete uniform 3) participation in discussions 8

11. STATE LAW AND NO CREDIT RULE THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!!!! YOU CAN NOT HAVE MORE THAN 10 ABSENCES DURING THE YEAR OR YOUR WILL NOT PASS THE CLASS. YOU CAN NOT HAVE ANY MORE THAN 5 UNEXCUSED ABSENCES - YOU WILL EARN A “NO CREDIT” FOR THE CLASS. 11

12. College Readiness- New State Law All students in High School must be “College Ready” by the time they graduate. What does this mean?  students must get a passing score on at least one of these tests:  PERT  SAT  ACT Why should you worry about this in 11 th grade?  Because if you don’t pass one of these tests this year, next year you will lose an elective and be placed in a “College Readiness” course!  Also, Mrs. Herring will be giving a grade for: - taking the PERT and extra credit grades for passing the PERT. - Level 3 and above FCAT students must take SAT or ACT for a grade and will get extra credit if a passing grade is achieved. 12

13. American History EOC Exam What is the American History EOC?  This is a multiple choice (45-60 question) end of course exam that you should be able to pass at the end of this school year. Why is the EOC important?  The EOC will be worth 1/3 of your class grade!!! How will I know if I am learning the correct information?  There will be interim testing each 9 weeks to see where you are at. Is the EOC hard?  YES….but I will give you all the tools you need to pass. It is up to you, however, to do the work. Note: it is very important that we keep up the pace, this means you will have to do homework including reading at home. If you refuse to do so, you most likely will not pass this class or the test. The good news: History is incredibly interesting and you have a great teacher teaching it to you 13
