2 University Courses for High School Students Experience the Pace of a University Course Gain Confidence in Mathematical Ability Avoid Senior Mathematics Void Remain in the “Mathematics Pipeline”

3 Two Courses through WVU Mathematics Department Blue Ribbon Pre-Calculus WVU-Morgantown and WVUP WvEB Algebra WVU-Morgantown, Fairmont, Marshall, WVUIT

4 Blue Ribbon Pre-Calculus Four credit course (can be set up for concurrent enrollment) Students must meet WVU early entry as well as Mathematics Departmental requirements. High School teacher is adjunct of Mathematics Department

5 Blue Ribbon Pre-Calculus There is a designated Placement Test Day There is a designated Admittance Day

6 Blue Ribbon WVU Placement Test All interested Students must take the WVU Placement Test for Pre-calculus

7 Blue Ribbon WVU Placement Any student who does not pass the placement test may still register if: He/she has the appropriate ACT/SAT Math score ACT 24, SAT 560 He/she has teacher, parental, administrative consent Meets all other requirements

8 Blue Ribbon WVU Requirements Senior Status (Others considered on an individual basis) Overall GPA of 3.0

9 Blue Ribbon WVU Requirements A completed WVU application form. application fee - $15. A high school transcript that includes an overall GPA. Consent from high school principal Parental/guardian consent Completed Registration Form - $43/credit

10 Blue Ribbon Departmental Requirements An earned ”C“ or better in:Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry. A satisfactory score on the WVU pre- calculus placement test. A High School Mathematics teacher’s recommendation.

11 Blue Ribbon Course Requirements Students ( or counties) must buy books and laboratory manuals. Precalculus: Graphing and Data Analysis, 2/e by Sullivan Access to Computer is necessary.

12 Blue Ribbon Instructor Requirements Certified High School Mathematics Teacher Masters Degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education Must attend Professional Development Sessions

13 Blue Ribbon Instructor Requirements Application to Mathematics Department which includes Vitae/Resume Letters of Recommendation Certification/Degree verification

14 Blue Ribbon “Perks” WVU will pay $1600 per course To teacher if offered outside of school day To county if offered during school day (Make a deal) Must have 15 students in a course.

28 WvEB Algebra Facilitator Duties The facilitator will be the instructor of record for the high school credit portion of the course. The facilitator determines and records the high school grade of the student.

29 WvEB Algebra Facilitator Duties The high school credit curriculum may supplement the requirements of the higher education level of the course. Any curriculum additions to the W V EB Algebra Course design for high school credit become the responsibility of the high school teacher/facilitator to present, monitor, and use as needed in determining a grade.

30 WvEB Algebra Facilitator Duties Monitoring quizzes and tests in a supervised setting. Sending or giving student materials to the instructor of record. Handing graded materials back to the students.

31 WvEB Algebra Facilitator Duties Monitoring the completion of the homework assignments. Assisting and guiding students who need help with content of the course. Supervising computer laboratories and guiding student groups when needed through difficult laboratory topics.

32 WvEB Algebra Facilitator Duties Making sure that the computer facilities are functioning and reporting malfunctions to the appropriate support staff and the instructor of record. Assisting in counseling as to the appropriateness of the course for interested students.

33 WvEB Algebra Facilitator Duties The facilitator will be the "eyes and ears" for the instructor of record and will provide information about student concerns and in class performance to the instructor of record.

34 WvEB Algebra “Perks” WVU will pay $80/student for up to 10 students. For 11 students or more WVU will pay $1000 To teacher if offered outside of school day To county if offered during school day (Make a deal) No Minimum number of students required
