1 High Middle Ages From Dark to Light

2 Feudalism This is a system with the wealthy at the top controlling the land and those who live on it The Lords would control the land and give it out in fiefs to lesser nobles who would become know as vassals to the land owner The vassals in turn would become lords to even lower nobles

3 Feudalism At the top of this pyramid would eventually be the King of the country The consolidation of Feudal power is what made small kingdoms into countries

4 Country Making France is going to come out of the kingdom of the Franks England will become the country we know it as today with the invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066

5 Dark Ages to Middle Ages Civilization began to make its full recovery by around the year 1000 CE Trade began to pick up and cities began to grow A middle class of merchants and traders sprang up Countries will be ruled by kings with absolute power

6 Government Monarchical power will be lessened by such documents as the Magna Carta Parliaments will also begin to appear in the High Middle Ages with representation from the common people as well as nobles

7 Church Politics Pope Gregory VII- he felt that Bishops got their power from the Church not the Kings of Europe and tried to take the power away from them Emperor Henry IV- fought with Gregory over the power to instill Bishops

8 Crusades These were a series of Holy Wars with the Muslims over control of the Holy Land. (Mainly Jerusalem) map pg 217 The First Crusade was a victory for the Christians By the 3 rd Crusade Salah al Din, a Muslim leader, had conquered the city for Islam again.

9 What we got from the Crusades Knowledge: The Arabs had maintained classical Greek and Roman knowledge through the Dark Ages. Economics: New Trade routes and destinations

10 Hundred Years War Fought between France and England Joan of Arc was a famous woman who would lead French troops to some victories War would last from 1337- 1453
