4 What Is a Credit? One credit = 1 full year in a class One half credit = 1 semester of a class To earn credit: –Average must be 70% or better –Must attend 90% of days

5 Recommended Graduation Plan 1 credit of PE classes, athletics, or a PE substitute 2 credits of the same Foreign Language 1 credit of Fine Arts.5 credit of Speech (Teen Leadership) 5.5 additional elective credits

6 Distinguished Achievement Program Recognizes exceptional achievement See Course Guide for full description Still 26 credits –Third credit of the same foreign language –IPC and Math Models do not count as one of the four math or science credits –Four “advanced measures” – any combination of: Preapproved research project AP Test Score of 3 or higher PSAT recognition 80% or higher in College Credit course

7 Advanced Academics Pre-Advanced Placement and Honors classes are available in many subject areas. General rule: –Should have an “A” in current on-level class –OR an “A” or “B” in current Pre-AP/Honors class

9 Who should take Advanced Classes? Students who are: Self-motivated Hard-working Good time-manager Challenge-seeking Capable of handling more rigorous curriculum at a faster pace

12 Science Biology or Pre-AP Chemistry or Pre-AP (w/Alg 2) IPC or Pre-AP Physics Chemistry or Pre-AP (with Algebra 2) Principles of Physics 9th 10th 11th Physics 12th Chemistry (if not already taken) Elective Science (if Chemistry is complete) Elective Science

13 Social Studies World Geography or Pre-AP US History or AP or Dual Credit World History or AP Government & Economics or AP or Dual 9th 10th 11th 12th

14 Languages Other Than English Choose from: –Spanish –French Must take 2 years of the SAME language –Ex: Spanish 1 & Spanish 2 Wait until 10 th grade UNLESS: –You’re in Spanish 1 this year –You plan to take 3 or 4 years of high school foreign language

15 Fine Arts Choose from: –Art –Theater –Tech Theater –Orchestra –Band –Choir –Dance –Floral Design Must have one full credit of the same class.

16 Teen Leadership One semester course Meets state requirement for Communication Applications Focuses on: –Developing Clear Communication Skills –Making Decisions and Setting Goals –Building Character –Fostering Healthy Relationships –Dealing with Stress and Conflict STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for ALL 9 th Graders

17 Ways to Meet the Physical Education Requirement PE Classes Athletics (any school sport) Dance 1 (full year) Fall semesters of Cheerleading, Band, Band, or Drill Team Army Junior ROTC Off-Campus PE through approved vendor (requires approved application)

19 Texas Virtual School Network (www.TxVSN.org) Clearinghouse of online courses Provider/Receiver Districts Allotment Funding for now High school student may take up to 2 TxVSN courses/semester –Part of 7 period day –Outside of regular school day

Step 2: Look at the course catalog to see what you’d like to take. –Go to www.txvsn.orgwww.txvsn.org Hover mouse over TxVSN Catalog Click on High School Select Year: 2010-11 Select Semester: Fall, then Search This is the list of courses available this past fall and will give you a good idea of what will be offered next fall. Next fall’s courses are not published yet.

22 Interested in taking an online class? Step 3: Talk to your counselor about enrolling in a TxVSN course. –Review SmarterMeasure results Are you self-motivated? Are you ready for the independence? –Which course(s) should you take online? –Will you take the course(s) as part of your 7 periods or in addition to the 7 next year?

23 TxVSN Driver’s Education To get a driver’s license, students must: 1.Complete a driver safety education class to receive their permit 2.Then within the next six months complete 34 hours of required “in car” learning (professional or with approved/trained parents) 3.Be at least 16 and have six months experience driving with a permit TxVSN 56 hour course counts as ½ credit elective –Covers only the safety education class required for the permit, not any of the training behind the wheel –Student must be between 14 years 9 months and 17 years 1 month –Must be one of the 5.5 required elective credits, not an “EXTRA” elective to be eligible for state funding
