Ch 7 (Lecture #2) Shay’s Rebellion/Three-Firths Compromise/Republic/Democracy Pres & US Govt rap songs CD

Causes and Results of Shays’ Rebellion Causes: -After Amer Rev, economy-depression -Farmers could not sell goods and could not pay state taxes -Farmers – land seized or jail -Daniel Shays & group of men led rebellion, (Massachusetts), forced state courts to close Result: -Americans wanted strong nat’l govt to control rebellions/provide for security

Shays’ Rebellion – example of one of the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation (our 1 st constition) Specifically the weakness of the AOC = weak central govt that could not control rebellions Make the Connection: Shay’s Rebellion and Articles of Confederation

Why was the Constitutional Convention held in secret? All delegates (men from each state) to speak freely All delegates to change their minds Very “hot” issue – people afraid of creating a constitution that will give too much power to the federal govt.

How did the delegates settle the questions of representation in Congress? “Great Compromise” – created a 2 house legislature. House of Reps - #of seats/votes for each state would vary according to state’s population. Senate – each state has 2 senators House of Reps – makes large states happy Senate – makes small states happy

How did delegates at Constitutional Convention handle the issue of slavery? Included statement in constitution: that Congress would NOT interfere with slave trade for 20 years. “Three Fifths Compromise”- agreed to count every 5 slaves as 3 people re: taxation and # of delegates in the House of Representatives/

Republic/Representative govt = govt in which citizens rule through elected representatives Democracy = govt in which the power is held by the people.

Systems of Government Autocracy 1 person – all power Ex. – Monarchy or Dictatorship Oligarchy Few people-all power (richest/wisest) Democracy “The people” (all people) have the power

Democracy = govt where power held by the people Direct Democracy -Ex. Romans -All citizens (men) get together to discuss, vote, and make decisons Indirect Democracy (also means Republic &) (Represenative govt) - Ex. United States - Elected reps get together to discuss, vote, and make decisions - Why? - 1. Population in U.S. huge 2. Issues - complex

British Govt compared to US Govt US Govt Legislative Branch = - House of Reps & Senate - Speaker of the House & President Pro Temp (little power) Executive Br = Pres and Cabinet Judical Br = Courts (Power divided equally between 3 branches) British Govt Legislative Branch = - House of Lords & House of Commons - Prime Minister – head of legislative Branch – chooses cabinet (most powerful) Executive Br = Queen (little power) Judicial Br = Courts (Prime Minister more power than Queen)
