St. Ansgar is responsible for the first Catholic churches within Scandinavia. “Every Disciple of Christ is responsible in his own measure for the spread of the faith, but Christ the Lord is always calling from among his followers those whom he will, so that they may be with him and be sent by him to preach to the nations.”

3. I love Danishes. King Harald was baptized in 826. He was the king of Denmark until pagans dethroned him! Harald got the help of St. Ansgar. After they were defeated again, St. Ansgar moved on to help others. After Ansgar’s death a hundred years passed before the new Danish King, Harold Bluetooth, became baptized. Later King Cnut the Great declared Christianity the official faith of Denmark. St. Ansgar

4. King Olaf III was Baptized by an English bishop, bishop Siegfried, in the year 1,000 AD. After a Christian chieftain destroyed the pagan temple of Uppsala Christianity was able to spread. Later in the early 12 th century Christianity became the main religion.

5. In the 10 th century Norway began the processes of conversion. Hard working Anglo-Saxon monks and kings brought Christianity into Norway. After a brief period of pagan rule, St. Olaf (not king Olaf from Sweden) brought back the catholic church. This was after the rule of Olaf Tryggvason not to be confused with either of the other Olafs talked about. Tryggvason also advocated christianity.

6. Missionaries from Norway sent by Olaf Tryggvason converted Iceland. This wasn’t a hard transition because the Christian faith was not new to them. There slaves usually believed in Christianity. A pagan leader decided through prayer that Iceland should become Christian. In 1056 AD they received their first bishop.

7. The Origin of Christianity in Finland isn’t clear like most of the other Scandinavian countries. The English missionaries led the way. One of the major people to help with this is St. Henry of Uppsala. Henry was a bishop and Englishman. By 1220 AD a Bishop by the name of Thomas established the church in Finland.
