3 Copyright © National Department of Housing 2008 Housing Provision in South Africa Housing is a constitutional right for South Africans The department of Housing is committed to providing the poor and low income earners with access to housing opportunities Minimum standards of a house –40 square meters –2 bedrooms –Bathroom with toilet, shower and hand basin –Open plan kitchen and living area –Prepaid electricity board –Services – water and sanitation Government also provide free basic services to the indigent – limited water, electricity and land rates In the development of sustainable human settlements we also provide our citizens‘ with access to social amenities and economic opportunities.

This is highly critical in a service delivery environment such as ours.
