What is Earth Science? Jot down what you think Earth Science is. Also, known as geoscience, Earth Science studies the physical systems of the earth

Science can be classified according to three main categories. Major Categories of Science Life science deals with living things. Earth science investigates Earth and space. Physical science deals with matter and energy.

Earth Science: is four sciences rolled into one! Geology Meteorology Oceanography Astronomy

The first is: GEOLOGY which studies the systems of the Earth's interior and surface

The second is: ASTRONOMY which studies the universe, stars, planets, and moons In our case how the Earth relates to it’s place in the celestial sphere and how that effects The Earth’s systems.

The third is: METEOROLOGY which studies the Earth's atmosphere: weather and storms

The fourth is: OCEANOGRAPHY which studies the Earth's oceans.

But Coach Holmes are we not taking Earth and Environmental Science??? Ah yes. We do have that environmental element to this class.

Therefore what do you think environmental science adds to this class? It is the study of the interactions between biological and physical systems. Specifically how humans impact these physical systems.

Nope. Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment. Ecologists might investigate the relationship between a population of organisms and some physical characteristic of their environment,

Environmental Science Is the study of the physical and biological factors along with their chemical interactions that affect an organism… Specifically the human population? “Not in my Back Yard”

Science is a method for studying the natural world. The search for knowledge It is a process that uses observation and investigation to gain knowledge about events in nature. What is Science? 1.1 The Methods of Science

What is Science? Scientists ask questions to learn about the natural world. The Methods of Science It is a system of knowledge and the methods used to search for that knowledge!

WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY? The application of science How we apply the knowledge we have gleaned from science…in short…

What is an Earth Science Event?

An EVENT is: An Occurrence on Earth that causes a change

List an EVENT for each Branch of Earth Science in your notes.

Here are some EVENTS for OCEANOGRAPHY:

Here are some EVENTS for METEOROLOGY:

Here are some EVENTS for ASTRONOMY:

Here are some EVENTS for GEOLOGY:

What is an ACTIVITY of an OCEANOGRAPHER? Look in your textbook* in chapter 1: What Oceanographers do?

What is an ACTIVITY of an ASTRONOMER? Look in your textbook in chapter 1: What Astronomers Do?

What is an ACTIVITY of a GEOLOGIST? Look in your textbook in chapter 1: What Geologists Do?

What is an ACTIVITY of a METEOROLOGIST? Look in your textbook chapter 1: What Meteorologists Do?

YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS: Find two newspaper articles or pictures with captions relating to two different Earth Sciences. Cut them out. Attach to your worksheet. Answer these questions for EACH of the articles.

THE QUESTIONS FOR EACH ARTICLE ARE: Identify the BRANCH of Earth Science. What ACTIVITY would a scientist have to do for this article to be written? What EVENT is covered by this article?

The objective for this assignment is: 1.Identify the major branches o Earth Science 2. Describe the events that occur in each branch of Earth Science. Be sure you can answer questions about these objectives!
