1 World Religions Hinduism- Judaism – Confucianism – Buddhism – Christianity - Islam Hinduism Aryans and non- Aryans blended in India so did their religions Collection of these beliefs is known as Hinduism Worlds Oldest Religion Hinduism No single founder or set of ideas Developed slowly over time View religion as a way of liberating the soul of mistakes Moksha – state of perfect understanding

2 Hinduism Reincarnation – re- birth. They believe you are born again until you reach the state of Moksha in life Karma – good or bad deeds held by the soul, follows one from life to life Caste System – born into a class system

3 Buddhism Founder: Sidartha Gautama, Brahmin priests declared him to be a Buddha (enlightened one) He sought enlightenment or wisdom Preached the 4 Noble Truths 1. Life is filled with suffering and sorrow The cause of all suffering is desires for temporary pleasures The way to end suffering is to end desires Overcome desires by attaining enlightenment and follow the eightfold Path

4 Buddhism Nirvana – Ultimate Glory and release from all pain by flowing the eightfold Path As with Hinduism they accept reincarnation Rejected the thought of many gods believed in Hinduism Rejected the Caste System Final goals for both religions are similar with Mosksh for Hindus and Nirvana for Buddhists
