1 Rationale for choosing my goal.  I chose this as my goal because I had observed several children in my class not engaged with their learning.  I chose four children to focus on, knowing that the change in my practice will also have an impact on all of the students. Ka Hikitia – Managing for Success Ka Hikitia means to step up or lift up. As a teacher I see this as being reflective of my practice and willing to change to meet the needs of students. I need to find contexts for learning that will enable all my students and in particular Maori students to experience success.

2  Keeping the class programme structured so the children know what is happening and when.  Making an effort to be in constant contact with the family. Talking about what is happening in their child’s learning. Giving them ideas of how they can be involved.  Giving the children school responsibilities (flag, bell, P.E. shed) so they know they are needed and are an important part of not just in the class but as part of the whole school.  Finding suitable guided reading text that they will engage with and therefore see reading as enjoyable.  Using peer activities so they are supported with their tasks. What I have been doing. Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. Robert Collier

Evidence of change By Sue Ross Next Steps  Continue to have high expectations for all children.  Continue to reflect on my teaching and the student’s learning. Improved writing!
