What I have been doing Focussing on using students personal experience to create the context for our learning (could be something they talked about, something they wrote about in their newsboard or an experience they have had) Drawing on students prior knowledge to create a base for our lesson/learning (e.g. my selection of reading material) Making it known to students when I/other kids have learnt something from them so they can feel valued and feel like they have valuable knowledge Put more emphasis on making connections with the kids personal experience/prior knowledge so they can see how their prior knowledge is important (e.g. guided reading discussion/follow up reading tasks)

Kids Response Don’t assume the kids have knowledge or have had certain cultural experiences simply because of their ethnicity, find out what they actually know and have experienced Continue to be aware of opportunities to draw on students prior knowledge, be explicit in making the kids aware of the knowledge they are bringing to the lesson Take a risk – use a context that I know the kids have a lot of knowledge in and I have little knowledge in, let the kids knowledge and understanding build/guide the learning My Next Steps At first the kids didn’t realise they were teaching me/each other new things. I had to make this clear to them and from there they thought it was really cool. They felt important when we used their experiences as the lesson context and got excited when we talked about contexts they were familiar with and had their own prior knowledge about.
