1 Digital Citizenship

2 Digital Citizen  A person using IT in order to engage in society, politics, and government expectations.  “Those who use the internet regularly and effectively.”  Must have extensive skills, knowledge, and access of using the internet through computers, mobile phones, and web-ready devices to interact with private and public organizations.

3 Digital Citizenship  Begins when any child, teen, or adult signs up for an email address, post pictures, uses e-commerce to buy online merchandise.  Goes beyond simple internet activity, and eliminates exclusionary elements of ascriptive hierachy.

4 Digital Youth  Teens and young adults spend more time on the internet than watching TV.  Young people develop their civic identities between the ages of 15-22.  During this time they develop 3 attributes: civic literacy, civic skills, and civic attachment that compromise civic engagement later reflected in political actions of their adult lives.

5 Elements of a Digital Citizen  Element 1: Digital Access- most fundamental blocks of being a digital citizen.  Element 2: Digital Commerce- ability for users to recognize that much of the economy is regulated online.  Element 3: Digital Communication- understanding the variety of online communication mediums such as email and instant messaging.

6 Elements of a Digital Citizen  Element 4: Digital Literacy- understanding how to use various digital devices.  Element 5: Digital Etiquette- certain mediums demand more appropriate behavior and language.  Element 6: Digital Law- enforcement for illegal downloads, plagiarizing, hacking, creating viruses, sending spams, identity theft, cyberbullying, and so forth.

7 Elements of a Digital Citizen  Element 7: Digital Rights and Responsibilities- set of rights such as privacy, speech, and so forth.  Element 8: Digital Health- must be aware to not become overly dependent on the internet causing eye strain, headaches, stress problems, and so on.  Element 9: Digital Security- must take measures to be safe by practicing using difficult passwords, virus protection, backing up data, and so forth.
