2 What is Digital Citizenship? Digital citizenship is the rules and codes of behavior with regard to technology use. This is a complex topic covering the use, abuse and misuse of technology, divided into nine basic areas. 3 Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants Digital Natives - a term that refers to people who were born during the digital age and have had access to technology for all of their lives (e.g. cell phones, computers, videogames) Digital Immigrant – a term that refers to people who were born before the digital age and have adapted to it and learned to live in it.

4 Access and Literacy Equal ability to see and use the Internet and other technology both at school and at home. Learning the basics of using a computer, evaluating online resources to make sure they are truthful and accurate, learning how to find information on a specific topic

5 Communication and Health and Wellness Exchanging information using email, cell phones, messaging, wikis and blogs. Using proper hand placement and posture when keyboarding, balancing time with digital tools with time spent on other activities. This can be a danger to your physical and mental health. Is excessive use of digital tools a problem?

6 Rights and Responsibilities Etiquette Following acceptable use policies and terms or conditions of use Using technology responsibly Reporting inappropriate use of technology Using technology in a way that doesn’t affect others negatively Using technology only when it is appropriate Respecting others online by not posting information that is hurtful or untrue

7 Security Law Protecting hardware and network security by using secure and secret passwords Protecting personal security by not posting personal information online. Dangers of posting personal information Understanding how to use and share music, photos and movies legally Creating original works that are free from plagiarism Respecting the privacy of others and the integrity of networks in terms of passwords and data. Downloading music is illegal
