2 Internationalism Should nation-states be part of the larger community How can nation’s be part of the larger community Why would some countries what to be involved in the world’s economy and political affairs? Why wouldn’t countries want to be involved in the world’s economy and political affairs?

4 Halliday’s Three Concepts of Internationalism Revolutionary Internationalism is the belief that conflicts within societies are determined by international factors and alliances French Revolution American Revolution Feminism Environmentalism

5 Halliday’s Three Concepts of Internationalism Liberal internationalism is the belief that, through greater interaction and co- operation, nations and nation-states can achieve common goals, especially peace and prosperity League of NationsUNNGO’s Economic??

6 Motivations behind Internationalism The needs and wants that motivate nation-states do not operate in isolation. They overlap, combine, and build on one another in a complex relationship

7 Economic Stability People and nations face the same kind of questions when it comes to dealing with the economy. Money? Employment? Education?

8 Peace and Security People want safe streets, they want their possessions to be secure, and they want to live free of fear of suffering or psychological harm

9 Peace and Security How does a country achieve this? In Canada we have the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. What about Internationally? How does Canada achieve Peace and Security internationally? Canada belongs to a number of different International Organizations that help protect her citizens at home and citizens of the world

10 Self-Determination Nations and nation-states want to control their own fate and may try to do this by seeking either self- determination or outright sovereignty

11 Humanitarianism Many nation-states take action to relieve suffering and protect the innocent. Natural disasters, disease, war and conflict can all cause tremendous suffering In these situations, many countries offer humanitarian aid, which may include providing money and supplies, as well as accepting and sheltering refugees.

12 Motivations against Internationalism Why would a nation-state not want to participate in a globally? Policy against Internationalism - Isolationism US and World War I and II Canada going to Iraq
