National 5 Weather Factors affecting Temperature[Date] Today I will: - Understand the four different factors which influence the temperature

Weather is a phenomena occurring in the atmosphere at any given time. It can change quickly. Climate refers to the average atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time. National 5 Weather WEATHER ELEMENTEXAMPLES TemperatureHot, freezing, 3 degrees Celsius Precipitation1.5mm Wind SpeedWindy, 50km/h Wind DirectionNortherly Cloud AmountCloudy, overcast, 5 oktas VisibilityClear or foggy Air PressureHigh pressure, 1032mb Sunshine AmountSunny, 8 hours

National 5 Weather

National 5 Weather 1. Latitude (distance from the equator)

National 5 Weather 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 10. 11. 12. 9. 13. At the back of your jotter write the numbers 1 to 13. Write the correct labels next to each one. Numbers 1 to 5 are numbers whereas the rest are labels.

National 5 Weather Latitude or distance from the equator Temperatures drop the further an area is from the equator due to the curvature of the earth. In areas closer to the poles, sunlight has a larger area of atmosphere to pass through and the sun is at a lower angle in the sky. As a result, more energy is lost and temperatures are cooler.

National 5 Weather The presence of ice and snow nearer the poles causes a higher albedo, meaning that more solar energy is reflected, also contributing to the cold.

National 5 Weather 2. Aspect In the Northern Hemisphere, south facing slopes are warmer as they receive far more sunlight than north facing ones and they are sheltered from the wind.

National 5 Weather 3. Altitude or Relief Locations at a higher altitude have colder temperatures. Temperature usually decreases by 1°C for every 100 metres in altitude.

National 5 Weather Mt Kilimanjaro is 5895m Maximum Temperature in Moshi is 26⁰C. Moshi is located 800m above sea level. What is the temperature at the top of the mountain?

National 5 Weather Temperature usually decreases by 1°C for every 100 metres in altitude.

National 5 Weather 4. Distance from the sea - Oceans heat up and cool down much more slowly than land. This means that coastal locations tend to be cooler in summer and warmer in winter than places inland at the same latitude and altitude.

National 5 Weather - A warm ocean current called the North Atlantic Drift keeps Britain warmer than it should. - Our prevailing wind comes from the South West and so they bring warmth from the Atlantic.
