Transportation Daniella Kay, Cadeena Liou, Brandon Moon, Christina Nyman

Important People John McAdam Scottish engineer Invented macadam roads Roads made by layers of smaller stones placed on top of larger stones Method is still used today (small stones are welded with asphalt) George Stephenson English engineer Invented steam powered locomotive that could run on rails Created The Rocket Train that pulled cars from Liverpool to Manchester at 29 mph

Important People (cont.) Robert Fulton American Started first steady local steamboat service Clermont Made trips between NYC and Albany on the Hudson River Great Western Crossed the Atlantic Ocean in only 15 days Samuel Cunard British Founded Cunard Line shipping company Made regular trips across the Atlantic for business

New Methods Macadam roads (layers of small and large stones) were used frequently Canals were made out of Europe’s river, served as water highways Locks- gates that regulate the level and flow of canals Locomotives- steam powered trains that ran on rails Steamboats- ships powered by steam

Improvements on Old Methods Trains Steel rails and air brakes More comfortable coaches and special cars This made traveling by train faster, safer, and more affordable Ships Cunard Line shipping company Provided transportation service across the Atlantic Iron and steel instead of wood This made transporting goods cheaper and faster

Predictions for Great Britain Transportation will contribute to the industrialization of Britain Improvement in roads will lead to faster and safer travel (for people and goods) Communication with other countries will improve because of new ways to transport information Transportation will continue to get faster, safer, and more affordable

Predictions on Spread and Impact on World When goods were delivered from place to place, people observed and copied the modes used to transport the goods This allowed other countries to use the same quick and efficient methods of transportation that Britain used Because of new transportation, countries were able to trade with countries that they couldn’t trade with before This spread will lead to more advanced technology in the future

Contribution to the Industrial Revolution Factories needed materials delivered quickly and in mass quantities, and the factories’ products needed to be brought to the market in the same respect Roads during the Middle Ages were too dangerous to continue using (dust, deep mud, cracks, etc.) Transportation would be slower and more expensive Transportation would not be what is today without big inventions and changes made during the Industrial Revolution Western Europe and America would not have had the same connection that they did if it wasn’t for the advancements made to travel
