1 Gender Wealth Inequalities Updated information

2 Evidence of discrimination  Birmingham City Council had to pay out nearly £800 million to women who were not paid bonuses men were getting for similar work  Women in catering and cleaning did not receive these whilst street cleaners, refuse collectors did

3 Equal Pay Day – 7 th November 2013  The Fawcett Society marks Equal Pay Day – the point in the year when women in effect ‘stop earning’ because of the 15 per cent gender pay gap.  Benefit cuts have been found to hit women twice as hard as men  Women working in the public sector experience a smaller gap than those working in the private sector.  With a million public sector jobs set to go in the next few years, the average gap in pay could widen as women take up lower paid work in the private sector  Two thirds of those earning minimum wage or below are women

4 Flexible Working Regulations (2003)  Gives employees the legal right to ask for a flexible working pattern, including working from home, reduced hours or different hours, for workers with children aged under six years.  The right to request flexible working was extended to about 4.5 million parents of children aged up to 16 in 2009  Over 90% of requests are granted  Makes it easier for women to remain in the workplace
