7  Average life expectancy in Sub-Saharan Africa is now 47 years, when it could have been 62 without AIDS.  It is thought that almost half of all deaths in South Africa, and a staggering 71% of deaths among those aged between 15 and 49, are caused by AIDS.  Average life expectancy in South Africa is now 55 years – without AIDS, it is estimated that it would be 64. Over half of 15 year olds are not expected to reach the age of 60.

9  In Botswana, an estimated 120,000 children have lost at least one parent to the epidemic.  In Lesotho, the country is also struggling to cope with 130,000 AIDS orphans.  In Lesotho, crippling poverty combined with the AIDS epidemic has caused average life expectancy to drop.  90% of all children orphaned by AIDS live in Sub-Saharan Africa
