So who was the best/most influential leader and why?

Pope Gregory 1st He increased the power of the Pope/Church in Europe Papacy became secular The Church gains more political power over European kings Supports his Christian followers Raised Armies Built Roads Treaty negotiating Financial and political backing of Christian Kings

Charles Martell (The Hammer) Political ruler but not called king; Kept other empires at bay, but couldn’t really unite Germanic kingdoms Paved the way for the Carolingian Dynasty

Charlemagne (Charles the Great!) Conquered Europe Brought all Germanic Tribes under one rule and one church Christian Ruler Used the Papacy as a partner Crowned “Emperor” by Pope

Feudalism – system of government Basically it’s a system of exchange… A King gives land in exchange for loyalty, military service, and protection of his people The land is given to nobles (rich/powerful, elites) Medieval Examples: Christian Kings and their nobles **Pope and Christian Kings **loyalty for support of reign
