Carbohydrates Major source of energy for body Two Types of Carbohydrates: –Simple carbohydrates Also called simple sugars. –Complex carbohydrates Also called starches. Found in most foods like: –Bread, crackers, pasta, and rice –Vegetables –Simple Sugars are Candy Simple carbs make you hungry quicker Is an organic compound

Fibre People don't eat enough fiber Obesity is uncommon in high-fiber diets 2 kinds of fiber: –Insoluble found in cereals or whole grains Absorbs liquid –Soluble found in fruits and vegetables Dissolves in water Forms a gel when water’s added Sources are: –Whole grain breads and cereals –Fruit and Vegetables –Almonds Prevents diabetes and heart disease Lowers bad cholesterol

Fats Certain fats are good for us 3 types of Fats: –Unsaturated Fats Can be good for heart health –Saturated Fats Raises blood cholesterol levels Increases risk of heart disease –Trans Fats Same as saturated fats Sources are: –Nuts, oils, butter, crackers, chips, microwave popcorn –Meats (e.g. beef) –Oreos, Icing, microwave popcorn –Fast-food and takeout meals Gives food texture and flavour High in calories Most fruits, vegetables, have almost no fat

Protein Builds, maintains, and replaces your bodies tissues Types of Protein: –Complete Contains the nine amino acids Comes from animals (e.g. Milk and Meat) –Incomplete Lacks one or more of amino acids Comes from vegetables Found in: –Fish and Meat –Cheese, Milk, Eggs, Yogurt and Peanut Butter –Bread and Pasta –Peanut Butter, Nuts and Seeds –Some vegetables Protects you from disease, keeps lungs healthy

Vitamins Some Vitamins are: –A - carrots helps you see at night –B - green vegetables help body make protein, energy –C - oranges helps bodies heal cuts –D - milk helps your bones –E - Keeps lungs and red blood cells healthy –K - Keeps body from being clotted The 2 types of vitamins: –Fat Soluble Stored in you liver and fat tissues Wait around in body fat until needed –Water Soluble They travel through your bloodstream Need to be replaced

Dietary Minerals Found in many many foods Types of Minerals: –Calcium –Magnesium –Phosphorus –Chlorine –Potassium –Sodium –Sulfur –Zinc Not enough minerals leads to health problems Little calcium leads to weaker bones Help bodies grow, develop, and stay healthy Body uses minerals to perform different functions

Dietary Minerals Cont’d 2 types of dietary minerals: –Macro minerals Needs larger amounts than trace minerals –Trace Minerals Tiny bit of it is needed Mineral Sources: –Dairy Products (e.g. Milk, Cheese, Yogurt) –Fish (e.g. Salmon) –Meat (Red Meat, Beef, Lamb, Pork) –Vegetables (Green Vegetables, potatoes, beans) –Fruits (Dried Fruits, Bananas, Oranges) –Grains (Bread, Oats)

Water Body doesn't have water called being dehydrated Living things must have water to survive Without water, body would stop working properly Is more than half body weight Without it, you can't survive many days
