Africa Before Imperialism EuropeansAfricans Africa was undeveloped, unorganized group of population Europeans helped the uncivilized population to be civilized and organized Christianized people Had control over 10% of Africa’s land to help the development Conducted trade that increased the price of raw materials held the own tradition and culture divided into hundreds of ethnic and linguistic groups with own different tradition continued the traditional beliefs Europeans messed up with cultural system The history of (powerful) Africans keeping Europe out for 400 years was ruined Europeans held the control over native’s land for their own goods Trade made the tribes like Chokwe and Yao work for nothing Lost gold and ivory

Nations compete for overseas Empire EuropeansAfricans Missionaries, explorers, humanists went to stop the slave trade David Livingstone went to abolish the slave trade Better control over rights and lands Help rural natives politically, economically, and in way of better social life “ all great nations in the full ness of their strength have desired to set their mark upon barbarian land” – Treitschke westernize with the best way of development Lied to natives Licensed companies that exploited Africans Forced natives to work and collect rubber plants Forced labor, excessive taxation, abuse of native Congolese take over territory by force politically, economically and social life racism, superior thoughts negative influence of western civilization

Three Groups of Clash over Africa EuropeansAfricans Was just a conflict to take care of Africa better Took charge of political rights British failed Unable to keep kingdom interact against superior arms of British invaders Became British land in 1887 Lost freedom War occurred Boer war was in Africa Losses of land

Imperialism

Setting the stage EuropeansAfricans We even fought for better control and influence over Africa, and tried not to ruin the nature Europeans paid no attention to previous historical and political divisions such as caliphates and kingdoms Ruined the society system They controlled over land, people, and our resources

Colonial control takes many forms EuropeansAfricans We influenced the developmental improvement over economic, political and social lives Shaped the economies of lands to benefit the natives Shaped a better custom by westernizing Divided the colonial control into more accurate system: colony, protectorate, sphere of influence, and economic imperialism Ruined the economy, politics and society Shaped the economy in a way that can only benefit the Europeans They had the rights Lost the own culture and custom

Patters of Imperialist Management EuropeansAfricans “asked” local ruler to accept British authority of rights We asked for daily management of a colony for a better condition and flow Helped south Africa in 1890s also French and European helped for needs and held the rights for better control and development Westernizing is the best way for country to develop and technologically better Fooled local ruler to accept British Authority to rule Was a plan that would lead our natives to govern ourselves Influenced the negative effect to South Africa in 1890’s Rude enough to take direct control over other native’s land Never ever gave the rights and properties Forced us to suit to European Culture

British colony EuropeansAfricans In 1807, Britain outlawed the slave trade Freed some slaves on the West African coast Britain got the African’s group into fight Royal Niger company gained control of palm-oil trade by own power Entire Nigeria was a colony Difficult times on language, culture, and religion

African Resistance EuropeansAfricans Block from help Wasn’t trying to invade * Declared a war that would make Europeans into awkward situation European always forced their superior beliefs 50 years of resistance Unfair movements Lack of machines No guns Menelik became emperor of Ethiopia Had to give up portion of land Declared war and won Europeans lost with the “developed Machines”

Impact of colonial rule EuropeansAfricans Technological development Raids between rival tribes were reduced Improved sanitation and brought hospitals and schools Literacy rates improved Positive economic expansion Products valued more Lost control of their land and their independence Died because of new diseases such as small pox Lost people in resisting the Europeans Famine Breakdown of traditional cultures Traditional authority were replaced
