ELI-Attoseconds (Hungary) focused on physics of ultrashort optical pulses in attosecond order ELI-Nuclear Physics (Romania) photonuclear physic s ELI-NP: 293 M€, project approved by EC in September 2012 First phase (2012-2015) 180 M€ ( EC Structural funds: 149 M€) Second Phase: 2015 - 2017

8 “HORIA HULUBEI” NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICS AND NUCLEAR ENGINEERING (IFIN-HH) IFIN-HH Historical Radioactive Waste  1957 – 1975: 3000 barrels  1975 – Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant ;  1985 - Baita Bihor repository  2000: still 879 barrels stored at Magurele site solutions: - ANDRAD, CNCAN: unacceptable solution - keep them in long term storage at Magurele - IFIN-HH with the support of ANCS and AN and under a cooperation project with DTI –UK : final disposal at Baita Bihor repository (1 million euros)  2006: all the historical radioactive waste – solved issue

9 “HORIA HULUBEI” NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICS AND NUCLEAR ENGINEERING (IFIN-HH) IFIN-HH Programs to upgrade the infrastructure related to Radioactive Waste Management Phare 2006 - “ Upgrading of the Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant (STDR) from IFIN-HH” (TA+W) - AQUA EXPRESS installation for liquid waste treatment (IFIN-HH funds– 70.000 USD) - equipments and devices - HG 902 /2010 (821. 000 Euro) Phare 2006 - “ Up-Grading of the Baita-Bihor Repository for Institutional Radioactive Waste in Romania” (TA+W) TA – EU – (444.567 Euro) W – IFIN-HH funds (1,1 Meuro) TCP - Assistance to Develop Technology and Improve Capability for the Conditioning of Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources including Alpha and Neutron Sources - ROM 3/006 - 104.948 USD ( 2007 – 2009 ) TCP - Strengthening IFIN-HH Capacity in Radioactive Waste Management - ROM 9/029 – 80.655 USD – (2009 – 2011)

10 “HORIA HULUBEI” NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICS AND NUCLEAR ENGINEERING (IFIN-HH) IFIN-HH Decommisioning of theVVRS Research Reactor HG 898/2009 (2010-2020) Stages: 2010-2012: Site preparation and shipment in the RF of the Spent Fuel 2011-2013: Modernization of the Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant installations 2013–2020: Decomissioning works and radioactive waste management Essential: uninterrupted flux of the radioactive waste Research Reactor Decommissioning ⇨ Waste Treatment Plant and storage ⇨ Final Disposal at Baita Repository IFIN-HH position : The transfer of the Baita Bihor repository from IFIN-HH would produce major perturbation of the activity and it is completely unacceptable
