4 As a junior, what should I be doing now? 1. Researching your desired major 2. Make a list of schools that offer your major 3. Consider this— 1. Cost 2. Location 3. Size 4. Begin visiting colleges 5. Visit with college reps in the Counseling Office 1. Show demonstrated interest!

6 College Visits ● Make appointments in advance! ● To arrange for limited-excused absence: – Your parent should call the attendance center (263-0611) in advance to arrange for a “limited excuse absence” – The college's personnel should provide a statement on school letterhead. Return this to the attendance center.

7 College Visits ● Weekend programs are posted by the counseling office. ● Vacation days are October 12, 13 and October 29, 30, and November 11. ● Illinois Central College – Staff available all evenings except Friday. – Limited excuse requires scheduled appointment with advisor. College Night at ICC October 21, 2009 5:30pm-8:00pm Ramsey Gymnasium Over 80 college will be represented

8 Applying for College Without exception, below are the top 3 factors used in gaining admissions to college—in order of importance: 1. Classes taken in high school— strength of schedule 2. Grades 3. Standardized tests—ACT, SAT

9 Application Process ● You should apply in the fall of your senior year. – Pay attention to deadlines. Each college is different! ● Apply online. You’ll get results quicker! ● Send your transcript. Request forms are available in the counseling office. $1.00 charge per transcript.

12 Opportunities ● Health Career Encounter @ Methodist – Explore different careers in the medical field. – See Mrs. Rademaker for details – Only 16 spots available! ● Peer Helpers – Interested in working with younger students or peers? – Opportunities to travel to the elementary schools or junior high. – Looks GREAT on a college application! – See Mrs. Rademaker for details. ● Golden Apple Scholars – $18,000 scholarship opportunity – For students interested in pursuing a degree in education (elementary, middle, or secondary) and attending college in Illinois. – See Mrs. Ripka for more info.

13 MHS Schedule Changes ● Before 5 th week (Sept. 23) – No notation on transcript – May only drop for a study hall ● 6 th week through 10 th week (Oct. 28) – WP = Withdraw passing / WF= Withdraw failing – May only drop for a study hall ● After 10 th week will not be allowed to drop

17 TESTING INFORMATION PSAT/NMSQT At MHS, October 14 during 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd hours. – $17.00 fee, checks payable to Morton High School – Register by Friday, September 18 – Available to the first 100 students – Late registrations will not be accepted! Who should take the PSAT? – Anyone who needs PSAT results for scholarships – Anyone who needs SAT practice

18 TESTING INFORMATION PSAE: April 28-29, 2010 (Prairie State Achievement Exam) ● Day 1 – State ACT ● Day 2 –WorkKeys No need to register online. You will register at school!

19 TESTING INFORMATION Consumer Ed. Proficiency Test October 7, 2009 or January 26, 2010 8:00am-10:00am Register by 3:00pm October 2 nd —No late registrations! Students currently enrolled in the class are not eligible for this test. Who should take this test: Students that wish to proficiency out of Consumer Ed. or Resource Management
