1. Introduction Engage the reader – Use a hook to capture the readers attention – Ex- “Imagine your living on an island living in peace and enjoying what nature has to offer and then one day out of no where a group of men arrive and try to claim the island as theirs. Pretty rude right? Well this is exactly what happen to the Native Indians, when Christopher Columbus landed in the New World.”

2. What not to do in a Introduction Announce your Intentions – Ex- “This paper is about The Native Indians having the right to Claim the Americas” Say your name – “Hi my name is Albert Einstein and this paper is about…..”

3. Thesis Statement A thesis statement is a sentence or two that is located either in an introduction or second paragraph, that contains the focus (what you are writing about) of your essay and tells the reader what your essay is going to be about. – Ex: “Even though the Native Indians didn’t believe someone could own land, they had all rights to be the owners of the Americas because they was there first.”

4. Citing Sources When using textual evidence to support your argument you must cite the sources. If you are using a word for word excerpt from a source you must use quotations marks. – Ex- According to Christopher Columbus journal, he stated “the Indians were…” – The Taino people where very friendly. According to the short story “Morning Girl”, the Taino girl was waving to the Europeans screaming “Hello”.

5. Conclusion A conclusion is a restatement of your thesis statement. It wraps up your entire essay Make a Counter Claim in your conclusion – Ex: “Even though Christopher Columbus and the Europeans had better technology and were more of an advance civilization, they had no rights to take something that never belonged to them. The last time I checked that’s called robbery.”

6. Bibliography A bibliography is a list of all the sources you used to complete your essay. (websites, text book, Primary Sources, Secondary Sources) A bibliography is written on a separate of paper with “Bibliography” centered at the top with the sources listed under it.
