1 Mrs. Lleras’ Second Grade Class Welcome!

2 Welcome to Second Grade!  In our classroom, there are many opportunities for learning.  If you have any questions during my presentation, please let me know.

3 All About Me  My background  I moved to Seaford in third grade.  I went to Seaford schools and I graduated from Seaford High School. Now I teach in Seaford.  I graduated from Wilmington University twice.  My experience  This is my fourth year teaching second grade.  I have also taught fourth grade and computer lab, but I love second grade!

5 My Goals  To help your child grow in your reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and social skills.  To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment.  To help your child make new friends and discover new interests.

6 Class Subjects  The subjects we will study during second grade are:  Reading  Writing  Math  Science  Social studies  Music, Art, P.E., Computers, and Library

7 Reading In our class, we will use the Open Court Reading Series.  We will read in whole group and in small groups. These groups will be based on many things including: interest, ability, and skills that we are learning.  Reading and Writing Binder to organize reading materials

8 Writing We use Zaner Bloser’s: Strategies for Writers.  This program helps students write by teaching them the process of writing: prewriting (gathering ideas & organizing), drafting, revising (adding & taking out), editing (proofreading), and publishing.  This program is rubric based.  Students will also journal-free writing

9 Math During math we will practice many skills. We use Trailblazers.  We will learn how to solve math problems in a way that makes sense to us.  We will work to create and explain our own strategies and discover new ways to solve problems.  Math folder for 200’s Chart and DPP’s

10 Science We will study insects, health and nutrition, balancing and weighing, and soils.  Students will participate in many hands on investigations.  Information will be kept in a folder  Some review sheets will be sent home before the tests

11 Social Studies Our social studies focus in second grade is making a difference: belonging to many groups, working together, being good citizens, and people in history.  Information will be kept in a folder  Review sheets will be sent home before tests

12 Classroom Community  Our classroom is a community, a family. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.  Our class rules are:  Be respectful, responsible, and safe.  Be organized and follow directions.  Treat others they way you want to be treated  I use the Flip Card System in my classroom and give out Jay Money for positive behavior.

14 What’s Up With the Tub?  The tub is for silent reading.  Once a day the students will Drop Everything And Read (DEAR).  One student will sit and the tub and read. A new student is picked everyday.

15 Homework  A homework packet will be sent out in the beginning week.  Students will have the entire week to complete it. If they finish it early they may turn it in early. If not, it is due at the end of the week.  This homework schedule is beneficial with busy families (which family isn’t busy ).  Assignments: Spelling (2), Math (4), Reading Comprehension (3), occasionally there will be science and social studies assignments.  Please sign student’s homework sheets.  Students should read every night. Books can be read with someone or independently.

16 Family Participation  Please plan to get involved in our classroom this year!  Studies show that students are much more successful when their families are involved with their teacher to create a team atmosphere!  Sign up to help out in a way that suits your family before leaving today!
