2 Go towards organic waste utilization instead of organic waste production by producing more valuable concentrated products from waste closer to their generation site using feedstock agnostic technologies. Main concept behind the Network 2 nd generation FSCW re-use

3 Objectives of the BIS Network Develop the valorisation of FSCW as an alternative carbon source for identified higher value bio-derived chemicals, material and/or fuel products overcome technological barriers, go beyond 1st generation organic waste reuse and recycling (e.g. feed, composting, anaerobic digestion) Form a multidisciplinary scientific community Strengthening cooperation between academia and industry

4 FSCW volumes available in California Agricultural waste: 46 MT/y Grape pomace: 122,000 T/y Vegetable crop residues: 1,000,000 T/y Tomato pomace: 60,000 T/y Nut shells & pits (i.e. olive): 400,000 T/y Rice Hulls & cotton residue (grain & fibre processing): 450,000 T/ y Meat processing waste: 65,000 T/y Food scraps in MSW: 1.6-2 MT/y

6 The BIS principles 1.Think of Waste as a Resource! We need renewable alternatives to oil-derived feedstocks 2.Value Waste Stop one-way uses of waste, process by-products and residues by switching to waste valorising strategies instead of waste management strategies. 3.Consider closed-loop manufacturing Aim to improve resource efficiency by using concepts such as industrial symbiosis to reduce consumption of virgin resources.

7 4.Target Process Cost-effectiveness. Aim for maximum cost efficiency for a given process by using waste as a feedstock for the production of marketable high-value bio-chemicals, bio-fuels and bio- materials from waste. 5.Favour Clean and Green Technologies Aim to produce goods without hazardous inputs or impacts on our environment. 11 The New OPEC This project has captured the attention of: various industries (i.e. food, HPC), several media (BBC, national newspapers, ACS) & has been selected by the Ellen McArthur Foundation to serve as educational material for teenagers. Integrated microwave biorefinery 50% juice 50% waste 31.2 million T/y of citrus fruits are processed globally yielding 15.6 million T of citrus peel waste
