3 Characteristics  Repetitive thoughts  Immense amounts of stress  Cannot control the images that they see  Unproductive due to repetition of rituals

4 Symptoms  Fear of dirt  Fear of causing harm to others  Fear of making a mistake  Fear of being embarassed  Fear of thinking evil  Need for order, symmetry  Excessive doubt

5 Prevalence  In 2000, OCD was among the top 20 causes of mental illnesses between ages 15-44  OCD fourth most common mental illness  1-2% of the world are diagnosed with it  Lower among young children  Increases during childhood and adolescence

6 Eating Disorders  Abnormal eating habits- insufficient or excessive food  Binge Eating Disorder (BED)  Leads to obesity  Could be genetically inherited

7 Symptoms  Eating more than most people  Short breaks in between eating  Worried about eating too much  Feels guilty about eating a lot  Eats until physically uncomfortable  Eats when depressed  Eats even when not famished  Eats secretly

8 Prevalence  1.2% of US population  More common in women than men  3.5% of women in US in contrast to 2% in men
