Natural Resources and Environment Thematic Thrust Node Common Visioning Workshop 1-2 April Pretoria Sithembile Ndema sndema@fanrpan.org

Presentation Outline Natural Resources & Environment Projects 1. Africa-wide Climate Change Initiative for Dialogues (ACCID) 2. Strategies for Adapting to Climate Change in Rural Sub-Saharan Africa: Targeting the Most Vulnerable 3. Energy Crops and Agro forestry Systems for Arid and Semi-Arid Eco-Systems (Bio-Fuels) 4. Limpopo Basin Water Poverty Analysis, Water availability and Access, Agricultural Water Productivity, Institution and Intervention, Analysis and Knowledge Base Development Limpopo Basin Focal Project (LBFP)

About ACCID Three RECs, COMESA, EAC and SADC have developed the African Bio-Carbon Initiative (ABC-Initiative) ACCID established in 2008 by COMESA to ensure that African civil society and governments collaborate in COP14 and COP15 global platforms The ACCID and ABC initiatives feed into the NEPAD CAADP Pillar One

Objectives of the ACCID Project - Mobilise space for civil society to speak with one voice - Link adaptation and mitigation agenda to on-going negotiations leading to COP 15 - Equip CSOs with research-based evidence to promote national, regional and global pro-poor policy and practice in the mitigation and adaptation to climate change - Ensure that funds generated from carbon trade and other financial instruments for funding climate adaptation programmes benefit the poor and help Africa towards the attainment of the MDGs.

Role of the Nodes in the Project COMESA In country climate change round tables - Zimbabwe 15-16 April- Angola, Tanzania, Swaziland & Malawi Database on SLUM climate adaptation and mitigation projects - Template of climate change work in the different countries Country case studies - Identify specific projects that we can showcase

Implementing Partners: Supported by BMZ (Germany) Lead partner: International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). Other partners include : – 1. Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) – 2. Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) – 3. Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) – 4. Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) Strategies for Adapting Climate Change in Rural Sub- Saharan Africa: Targeting the Most Vulnerable

Goal: Reduced vulnerability of rural households to climate change through better-coordinated and targeted food system adaptation strategies. Purpose: To provide regional organizations, policymakers and farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa with tools to identify and implement appropriate adaptation strategies. About the Project

Provide help in creating linkages with key scientists and analysts. Assist in design of regionally-relevant socio- economic scenarios. - relevance of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment scenarios for climate change adaptation research in Southern Africa. Expected input from the Nodes

Energy Crops and Agro forestry Systems for Arid and Semi-Arid Eco-Systems (Bio-Fuels) The objectives of the project are - To establish a platform for policy dialogue & capacity building - To identify pathways for the sustainable provision of bioenergy - To enhance the exchange of knowledge on biofuels development

Project Set-up

FANRPANs Role in the Project -To coordinate policy research -To develop & evaluate policy initiatives for bioenergy development in Africa - To develop a roadmap for policy research - To provide policy recommendations on how to harness the potential of biofuels without damaging rural livelihoods and the ecosystem

Outputs to Date -Report on National Policies on Biofuels Sector Development in Sub-Saharan Africa -Report on International and Regional Policies and Biofuels Sector Development in Sub- Saharan Africa

Expected Outputs for 2009 -A concept paper on improved systems and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) -A report on the performance of the national and international policies (evaluation and review) -Policy recommendation paper -Roadmap for policy research

Expected input from the Nodes -Identify biofuels policies that are in place in the different countries

Limpopo River Basin Focal Project (LBFP)

Objectives of the Project -Identify strategic agricultural water interventions which can reduce poverty & enhance food, health, and environmental security in the Limpopo Basin -Identify gaps in knowledge about agricultural water management options in the basin requiring further research

FANRPANs Role in the Project There are 6 Work Packages in the project FANRPAN leads: -WP 4 Institutional Analysis and -WP 5 Interventions Packages

Outputs to Date - Water/Agriculture policy matrix (4) -Draft report on basin water availability -Literature review of water productivity -Draft report on institutional arrangements -Draft literature review on intervention packages -Project data base, wiki

Next Steps - Water poverty profile - Water availability report, maps - Water productivity report, maps - Policy and institutional hot spots - Strategic interventions for vetting by stakeholder partners - Web based, interactive mapping overlays
