Historic Jamestowne Power Point Activity The following images are a modern artist’s interpretation of various events that occurred at or near Jamestown. As a class discuss answers to the questions that accompany each image.

 As the English arrive, what do you believe these Powhatan Indians were thinking about these strange visitors?

 As the settlers arrived at the site they named Jamestown, what do you believe they were thinking?

 Describe all the activities you see the settlers performing in this image.

 What do you believe the Powhatan Indians are thinking as they watch the fort being built on “their” land?

 Before they built their houses, can you identify the two types of shelters the settlers used?

 Why do you believe John Smith is trading with the Powhatan Indians for food? Could the English have survived without the help of the Powhatans?

 Were the relations between the English and the Powhatan Indians always friendly as shown in this image? Why or why not?

 Based on this image do you believe that religion was important to the English Settlers? (Hint: the settlers were required to attend religious services twice on Sundays.)

 You are looking inside a Jamestown home in 1660. Compare what you see here with activities you do or items you have in your home.

 Based on this image, how did the settlers get their food? Identify the different foods in the image. Do you eat any of them today?

 Tobacco was Virginia’s cash crop. Define “cash crop”. If the settlers are growing a lot of tobacco, do you believe they sometimes did not grow enough food? Why or why not?

 Jamestown was Virginia’s first seat of government until 1699. Compare these rowhouses, built between 1660-1670, with the shelters used by the first settlers in 1607 (refer to slide 6).

 In 1676 a rebellion against the Governor caused Jamestown to be burned to the ground. Jamestown never fully recovered, becoming farmland and in 1934 a National Park.

COLONIAL NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK  Historic Jamestown today is where park rangers, archaeologist, curators, historians and many others work to protect and preserve this important national site. Have you visited any National Park near your home?
