1 Topic: Clauses Name:________________________________ Class/Pd: _________ Date: _________________________________ ?/MIs Objective : Vocabulary Phrase Clause Sentence Notes / Ideas I will write a combination of sentences, i.e. simple, compound, complex, and compound- complex, to make my writing fluid (SF) and interesting. A group of related words that is used as a single part of speech and does not contain both a subj. and a vb. Is a group of words that contains a vb and its subj. and is used as part of a sentence. Is a complete thought. It can be as small as two words, a subject and its verb.

2 continued ?/MIs Independent Clause Example: Subordinate Clauses Example: Notes / Ideas Expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself. It’s a sentence. Usually, the term independent clause is used only when it is joined with another clause. Sentence: My mother drove me to school. Independent Clause: Since I missed the bus, my mother drove me to school. A subordinate (or dependent) clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone. Sentence: I had my own horse when we lived in Montana. Independent Clause: I had my own horse. Subordinate Clause: when we lived in Montana

3 Adjective Clauses Common Relative Pronouns Examples: -Is a SC that is used as an adj. to modify a noun or a pronoun. -An adj. cl. Us. Follows the word or words it modifies and tells which one or what kind -An adj. cl. Is us. Intro. By a relative pronoun thatwhichwhowhomwhose Dinner was a big meal which began about 4 p.m. Ind. Cl: Dinner was a big meal Sub. Adj. Cl: which began about 4 p.m.

4 ?/MIs Subordinate Clauses Adverb Clauses Subordinating Conjunctions: Notes / Ideas The word subordinate means “less important.” It’s less important because it cannot stand by itself. Some SC begin with subordinating conj. sub. conj. usually intros an adv. clause afteras though since when althoughbecause so that whenever asbefore than where as ifeven though though wherever as long as if unless whether as soon as in order that untilwhile

5 Noun Clauses Common introductory words for noun clauses Examples: A noun clause is a subordinate clause that is used as a noun howthatwhatwhateverwhen whetherwhichwhowhoeverwhom whomeverwhy Give a free pass to whoever asks for one. Lane would not show either of us what he wrote.
