4 Measuring Liquids Beakers and flasks are good for measuring approximate volumes of liquids but have a margin of error of ±5% For more accurate measuring, use a graduated cylinder. Liquids form a meniscus (curved surface) in graduated cylinders. Read the volume at the bottom of the meniscus.

5 Reading a meniscus Never pick up the graduated cylinder, leave it on the table and bend down to be at eye level with the liquid. Read from the bottom of the meniscus! A. C. D. B.

6 Transferring Liquids To prevent splashing when pouring a liquid into an open container: Place a stirring rod in the container & pour the liquid down the rod To pour into a small- mouthed container (like a test tube): Pour the liquid into a beaker 1st. Then pour from beaker into smaller container using the spout of the beaker

7 Transferring Solids To a large-mouth container: use a spoon, spatula, or a scoopula to collect & transfer the solid To a small-mouth container: 1st crease a piece of paper in half, place the solid in the crease and pour into the container.

8 More safe procedures Never use a thermometer to stir a solution! You could break the thermometer. Always wear goggles over your eyes!

No playing in the lab! No eating or drinking in the lab! Follow directions and pay attention!
