2 E A R T H C H A R T E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L e-GLO e-GLO, Earth Charter Global Learning Opportunity, is a semester-long, online sustainability leadership course inspired by the Earth Charter Organized for the first time in Spring 2008

3 E A R T H C H A R T E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L Objective of e-GLO 2 To make a positive impact on society by familiarizing local level Earth Charter youth activists with sustainability leadership skills and shared ethics. Furthermore, this course will equip them with innovative skills in sustainability project planning, management and fundraising, as well as facilitating the effective use of new media. The ultimate aim is to further develop the capabilities necessary to conduct Earth Charter inspired action projects in the participants’ own communities.

8 E A R T H C H A R T E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L Session 1: Earth Charter, Sustainable Development and Youth Leadership Provides an overview of the course, the Earth Charter document, providing background of how it came into being and on the concepts of global ethics Sustainability Leadership Discusses on sustainability leadership and how does it differ from the traditional leadership and why youth leadership training is necessary Takes a deep look into how the Earth Charter can guide sustainability leaders and why global, shared ethics are needed. Introduces the ideas of interconnectedness and interdependence and shows how these themes are found throughout the Earth Charter and how they relate to sustainability New media

9 E A R T H C H A R T E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L Session 2: Innovation Capacity for innovation is essential in sustainability leadership –it is needed when searching for and developing new solutions that are linking social, environmental and economical issues Sustainability leaders with capacity for innovation are people who encourage decision-making across disciplines, understands interdependences and are open to new ideas If you have a good idea, how are you going to be heard? What is your strategy to engage key individuals in supporting you or joining you?

10 E A R T H C H A R T E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L Session 3: Intercultural / Interpersonal Communicative Competence Great communication skills are essential for a career in sustainability field; to be able to inform, engage and influence others towards sustainability The ability to communicate with different types of people from different backgrounds and to convince them to work together demands interpersonal and cultural communicative competence How to communicate with different audiences. Communication tips for working with groups and making presentations.

11 E A R T H C H A R T E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L Session 4: Learning from the successful projects Building from existing experiences is the most effective path to progress; this means that one can look for best practices and adapt the great ideas to his own context and situation. None of the champions of sustainable development thought up his or her contribution from scratch. However, as in the Urdu saying, even imitation requires intelligence. The message is: share experiences, learn from others; teach what you learn and prepare the ground for those who will follow. What can we learn from each other? How have you developed projects you are involved in? What was the methodology and exercises you used?

14 E A R T H C H A R T E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L e-GLO Certificate of Participation attends at least 6 of the 8 sessions reviews the materials for any missed sessions You are expected to attend all sessions –to listen to all presentations and engage with the speakers –engage in the text chat dialogue –participate in all break-out sessions –satisfactorily completes all e-GLO homework assignments on time
