GenTrans Technology Technical Presentation ABC Keypad

Introduction ABC Keypad™ is designed as a keyboard for a compact- size notebook PC. The goal of this development is to create a new standard of case design for mobile devices. As you know, the basic layout for a modern computer keyboard was invented by Christopher Sholes in 1868. Nowadays, when every person uses mobile devices in everyday life and work, it is a clear necessity of the standard mobile keyboard instead of a reduced-sized QWERTY layout which was initially intended for typing by two hands on a typewriter while a mobile device must be fitted for holding in one hand and typing on it by the other one. This requirement is critical for the effectiveness of communication and mobile computing.

Specification Figure 1 shows an entry-level, conceptual draft. It serves as a base of the standard. The system of typing is as following: The "A-F" keys and Space key are intended for the index finger, "G-T" keys for the middle finger and "U-Z" keys for the ring one. This method is used when you hold the joint between the display and the keyboard by the other hand or when you type on the mobile device in a desktop position. Fig.1

The major idea of this project is to realize the layout that is functionally identical to a full size computer keyboard. Using of ABC Keypad™ creates a new type of mobile keyboard without unnecessary switching between numeric and alphabetical symbols as in the most of the existing models. It consists of a standard numeric keypad complemented with the functional, control and symbols keys and a compact alphabetic keypad which is on hardware level implementing a unique system of typing by three fingers of one hand. In addition, the ABC Keypad™ design provides a full localization for other alphabet systems the similar way as for a standard computer keyboard and that is a crucial thing for being chosen by the customers around the world.

The keystrokes for the symbols: the second character on a button – is pressed by using Shift, the third character - using Alt (these characters might be transferred to the fourth characters on the other buttons in the localized version), the fourth character - using Ctrl (optional symbols, for example, euro and pound symbols). The keyboard layouts for a localized version are switched using Shift+ Tab combination. Also, by default, the following designations are used: F1 - Help, F2 - Browser, F3 - Mail, F4 - Backspace, Home – Alt+ Left, End – Alt+ Right, Start of Document - Ctrl+ Left, End of Document - Ctrl+Right, Previous Window – Alt+F1, Next Window – Alt+F2, Open File – Alt+F3, Close Window – Alt+F4, Esс – Ctrl+F1, Caps Lock – Ctrl+F2, Page Up – Ctrl+F3, Page Down - Ctrl+F4, Undo – Shift+ Right, Delete - Shift+Left, Copy - Shift+ F1, Paste – Shift+F2, Cut – Shift+F3, System Menu – Shift+F4, Taskbar – Alt+ Tab, Program Menu – Ctrl+ Tab. Quick Keys - Shift-Ctrl, Alt-Ctrl and Alt-Shift keys combinations.

Conclusion ABC Keypad™ is the base for a standard mobile keypad specification. Usability area of this standard is really limitless. It could be a mobile notebook for work and simultaneously a remote control for various home theater, WebTV and networking solutions. This layout let the developers integrate the functions of many devices in one mobile personal communicator and computer (Figure 2). This concept model represents a unified mobile device which would implement a great majority of the state-of-the-art mobile computing and consumer electronics technologies. Fig. 2
