WEATHER WONDERS Ellie Maraboli

Content Area: Science Grade Level: 1 st Summary: the purpose of this PowerPoint is to provide you with basic information about weather. Learning Target: Given this PowerPoint, the student will learn information about the weather and will answer provided questions with 100% accuracy. Content Standard: Standard 8 - The Atmosphere GLE 0107.8.1 Gather and interpret daily weather data.

HOW DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE WEATHER? We know everything that we know about the weather through a science called meteorology. Meteorology is the science that deals with the atmosphere and the weather, and the people who study this are called meteorologists. You and I know meteorologists as our local weatherman or weatherwoman!

HOW TO IDENTIFY WEATHER Weather is simply the condition of the atmosphere at any given time. This means, that weather is made up of the temperature, how much rain there is, and even how cloudy it is!

FAMOUS SEASONS AND THEIR WEATHER Winter: winter is our coldest season and is famous for snow! Depending on where you live, you may or may not experience snow. Snow forms in the clouds, freezing at 32 degrees Fahrenheit before the vapor can even become liquid. Spring: during spring, we experience a lot of rain. Spring normally begins sometime in March. Spring can sometimes stay cool, or it can get warmer outside-but not as hot as it is in the summer! The rain and the warmer weather are why we see pretty flowers at this time of the year! Summer: summer is our hottest season of the year! It is very important to drink a lot of water during the summer, because sometimes the heat can be dangerous. Sometimes we get heat advisories when the heat index is high. That means that it could really be 98 degrees outside, but it could feel like 115 degrees! Fall (autumn): Fall is cooler than summer and spring, but not as cold as winter. This is the season when we celebrate Thanksgiving, and when some people dress up for Halloween! Fall is when leaves start to turn brown and orange and fall off of the trees. This is because there will soon not be enough light outside to keep the leaves green and fresh, so trees start to prepare for winter.

WHAT IS A METEOROLOGIST? A. an astronautan astronaut B. a doctora doctor C. a weathermana weatherman D. a thermometera thermometer

CORRECT! That’s right! A meteorologist can also be known as our local weatherman!

WHICH PICTURE MATCHES WITH FALL, OR AUTUMN? A. B. C.

THAT’S RIGHT! Great job! We associate orange leaves with fall because that is the season when leaves start to change colors.

WHAT IS WEATHER? A. The condition of the atmosphere. The condition of the atmosphere. B. What time it is during the day. What time it is during the day. C. When there is a heat index. When there is a heat index.

NICE!! Weather is the condition of the atmosphere. This includes temperature, rainfall, and cloud coverage.

SUMMARY In this PowerPoint, you were able to grasp the basics of weather: our seasons, and what weather actually means.

INCORRECT That’s OK! Let’s try it again!
