2 Infinitives  Infinitives are the most basic form of verbs  In Spanish infinitives always end in –r  Examples Bailar – to dance Cantar – to sing Comer – to eat Leer – to read  Notice that when you use verbs in this form it means “to _________”

3 Conjugation  “Conjugate” means to change the ending of a verb  You must conjugate verbs so that others know who you are talking about  In other words, the verb’s conjugation must agree with the subject of the sentence This is called subject-verb agreement

4 - AR Endings  To conjugate verbs that end in –ar you must drop the –ar and add: PronounEndingPronounEnding yo-onosotros-amos tú-as él / ella / Usted -aellos / ellas / Ustedes -an 1 st person 2 nd person 3 rd person

5 Example  Bailar – to dance  Drop the –ar, and add the endings from your table PronounEndingPronounEnding yobailo I dance nosotrosbailamos We dance túbailas You dance él / ella / Usted baila He / she / you dance ellos / ellas / Ustedes bailan They / they / you all dance

6 Practice (as a class)  Fill in the table to conjugate the verb “nadar” – to swim PronounEndingPronounEnding yonosotros tú él / ella / Usted ellos / ellas / Ustedes

7 Practice (on your own)  Fill in the table to conjugate the following verbs: Llevar – to wear, to bring Trabajar – to work Patinar – to skate

8 Translate Translate the following phrase. Make sure you pay attention to subject-verb agreement. 1. I dance 2. You (informal) skate 3. He works 4. She dances 5. You (formal) swim 6. We wear 7. They work 8. You all (formal) wear
